We can clearly see how the film might have played a role in Donald Trump’s idealogy. He has himself talked about it on various occasions. In a 2002 interview with filmmaker Errol Morris (viaBusiness Insider), he said,

You learn in ‘Kane’ maybe wealth isn’t everything, because he had the wealth but he didn’t have the happiness. In real life, I believe that wealth does in fact isolate you from other people. It’s a protective mechanism – you have your guard up much more so [than] if you didn’t have wealth.

He also went on to point out a specific scene from the movie, where the imagery alludes to a growing distance between Kane and his wife as he accumulates more wealth. To this, Trump said,“Perhaps I can understand that.”He even gave Kane some humorous advice: “Get yourself a different woman.” The film also starred Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore, and Ray Collins.

Donald Trump HatedParasite’s 2020 Oscar win?

Despite being a cinephile, Donald Trump seems to have a very specific taste in movies. At a 2020 rally in Colorado Springs, he implied how he was dissatisfied withBong Joon-ho’s class satireParasitewinning the Best Picture award at the Oscars that year. Even with a massive crowd booing at him, Trump kept going on (via LA Times):

How bad were the Academy Awards this year? The winner is … a movie from South Korea! What the hell was that all about? We got enough problems with South Korea with trade. On top of that, they give [Bong] best movie of the year?

Parasitewon multiple Oscars in 2020, including Best Picture, for its unique storytelling, critical acclaim, and director Joon-ho’s effortless skill and charm. And Trump himself hadn’t watched the film (per LA Times), which makes his statement seem more politically inclined.

The Oscar, after all, is meant to be a celebration of art and cinematography that pushes boundaries and challenges conventions—and it should remain true to that spirit!

Citizen Kanecan be rented on Apple TV.
