Dragon Ballmight be Akira Toriyama’s brainchild, but it is not the product of a single person. Other than his assistants, Toyotarou, the editor ofDragon Ball, has made some of the largest contributions to the manga.

If anyone knows Dragon Ball as much as Toriyama (if not more), it is Toyotarou. Throughout the years of them working together, the editor and author have created an unbreakable bond that ultimately benefitsDragon Ballreaders.
Toyotaro Adds His Own Spin to Akira Toriyama’s Drafts
Inan interviewwithAkira Toriyama, Toyotarou was asked if he added his own ideas toDragon Ballwhile turning the author’s original draft into a finished manga. Toyotarou calmly admitted that he indeed added things to the draft.
That’s right. Ultimately things need to head towards the conclusion indicated by Toriyama-sensei’s original draft, but during that process I want to give various characters things to do.

It turns out that it is actually Toyotarou who has beenadding depth to theDragon Ballcharacters for so long. The editor explained that adding stubbornness to Vegeta’s character showed off his appeal and made the story more exciting. He strives to make the characters look cool and give everyone a chance to shine. He also sheepishly admitted that he does depart from the script at times.
At times like that I depart slightly from the script, but I guess you could say I’m faithful to its essence.

Toriyama himself cackled that he welcomed the changes made by Toyotarou. After all, he claimed that Toyotarou knew far more about Dragon Ball than the author himself.
Why Toyotarou’s Changes to Dragon Ball Were Crucial
If you think Toyotarou’s edits toDragon Ballbrought down its quality then think again. In fact, it was because of him that other characters have received their own spotlights. He also developed Vegeta’s character to bring a new appeal to the series.

Toyotarou admittedthat while his goal is to be the #1 fan ofDragon Ball, his decisions were always infavor of the characters.
For instance, if the goal is for Goku to have a direct showdown with Zamasu at the end, I can’t simply have Goku reach that point in peak condition. There needs to be various twists and turns before the two can face off against each other.

In the Future Trunks Saga, Toyotarou had made several edits which introduced new twists and turns into the arc. He was a bit uncertain about them, but they all ended up becoming a part ofDragon Ball.
Toyotarou’s efforts at changing the characters eventually paid off as everyone loves Vegeta’s character. The small script changes made by Toyotarou ended up making Vegeta a fan-favorite character. He also discussed that it is best for an author’s individuality to shine.
