Scarlett Johansson, best known for the critically acclaimed role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is one of the fiercest feminists in all of Hollywood’s entertainment industry. Not only has she been a longtime supporter of planned parenthood and reproductive rights, but the actress has also been quite vocal about many other feminist issues out there as well.

That said, when the issues came down to acknowledging the need to speak out on women’s sexual and reproductive rights and pointing out that many can’t actually talk about it without risking their personal safety, Johansson didn’t go quiet. If anything, her shedding light on these very issues made Jeremy Renner’s joke on Black Widow even worse than what the backlash followed.
Scarlett Johansson Unhesitantly Addressed A Major Feminist Issue
Over the years, one of the things that has established itself as a major issue is female sexuality: Women can’t really be s-xual human beings without having to endure some harmful shaming label in return. In fact, this issue has been so severe that even advocating for women’s rights of the same could even serve as downright dangerous to the person’s personal safety, amongst other things.
Hollywood heartthrobScarlett Johanssonunhesitantly shed light on the same. In an interview withCosmopolitan magazine, she said:

When women talk about enjoying s-x, it’s almost forbidden. Just having a healthy s-xual attitude, you are labeled as loose, wild, a sl-t. You have no morals, and you’re seen as some kind of s-xual deviant or someone who can’t be in a monogamous relationship. The minute you talk about enjoying yourself, being curious, that is still taboo.
Of course, that has unarguably been a serious issue that many have had to deal with, so Johansson is grateful and feels emboldened for being raised “in an environment that encouraged activism.”

Additionally, the actress has also been vocal about yet another major issueshe has been a longtime supporter of: Planned Parenthood and reproductive rights. If anything, theAvengers: Endgameactress feels that these two issues are intrinsically linked to s-x positivity and better health outcomes for women, and thus, advocates for women to be open and vocal about it all.
There’s no reason we shouldn’t be talking about our reproductive rights. They’re something we have to fight for and continue to protect. There’s nothing icky about talking about that stuff. Of course, it’s private and it’s your body, but we should take the stigma away.

That being said, it might be hard to come to terms with it but this issue of female sexuality and the stigma surrounding it is inevitably an ever-raging one, and is one that needs to be uprooted from the roots. But while her fierce, bold, and powerful comments as a die-hard feminist supporter are one thing, they further make one stunt from her Marvel co-stars, Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans, even more controversial than the backlash it received.
This Revelation Makes Jeremy Renner’sBlack WidowJoke Even More Controversial
Previously, in an interview withDigital Spy, actorsChris EvansandJeremy Renner, in a rather unfortunate turn of events, jokingly called Scarlett Johansson’s beloved superheroine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe some incredibly harsh words. This dates back to 2015, when they were busy promotingAvengers: Age of Ultronduring the film’s press tour.
Back then, it was brought to their pair’s notice that fans were shipping different character pairs from the saga, especially Black Widow with Hawkeye and Captain America. Also, sinceMark Ruffalo‘s Bruce Banner hadn’t really had that romance arc with Nat back then, Evans and Renner were asked to shed light on their own opinions on this surprise couple in the film as well.

To this, Renner said jokingly about Johansson’s superheroine, “She’s a sl-t,” causing both the actors to burst into laughter. If that wasn’t enough, Evans chimed in with his own commentobjectifying the character, calling her “a complete wh-re.” Putting this into context with Johansson’s revelation about female sexuality, it ostensibly stings a bit deeper than the controversy.
However, it didn’t take long for both actors to apologize as their derogatory slurs drew ire from fans online. Renner said in a statement provided toEntertainment Weekly: “I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.”
Evans, in the meanwhile, followed with a similar apology statement, as Entertainment Weekly reports him to have said, “Yesterday, we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize.”
Well, either way, it’s good that the actors realized the extent of the derogation that their joking words had on the respective female superheroine of the MCU, and took responsibility and accountability for their respective actions and comments. But this issue is still one of the most outrageous ones that needs to be gotten rid of as soon as possible.
