A new rumor has emerged claiming Yoko Taro, Square Enix and Platinum Games’NieR Automatais getting an anime adaptation.

Spanku_u is a leaker who already shared several anime projects before their official announcement this past year. In particular, the newBastard!!Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasyanimeannounced by Netflix was already leaked by them in late 2021. Spanku_u and their sources seem to have very good intel on Netflix anime projects in particular.

Additionally,NieR Automatais amillion-seller game, so it wouldn’t be surprising at all if it got an anime adaptation. However, there are many ways to make an anime adaptation, be it movies or TV series. The anime will also differ greatly depending on the studio and core staff working on it.
Moreover, while the rumor concerns a “NieR Automataanime”, there is a ton of material that could be adapted besides the game itself. Such as theJapan-exclusiveNieR Automatastage plays.Adapting a game to an anime is difficult, and many anime adaptations tend to go for stories the game didn’t cover in the first place, to be able to make their own story and pacing. A good example is the upcomingTrails of Cold Steelanime, which will adapt the Northern War story segment happening betweenCold Steel2and3.With a brand new female protagonist.
Last but not least, if Yoko Taro plays a decisive role in this anime project, he will definitely write a scenario different than the game’s story. I wouldn’t be surprised if Yoko Taro made the NieR Automata anime into a sequel to the game, or connected the dots with the NieR Reincarnation mobile game.
Whether Yoko Taro is involved or not will have a big influence on the final product. Taking all of this into account, I personally believe this “NieR Automataanime” won’t be like the originalNieR Automataat all.
