TheYellowstoneuniverse, created by Taylor Sheridan, has garnered a huge fandom in recent years. With its plethora of captivating characters, Sheridan’s vision for theYellowstoneuniverse is set to result in multiple spinoffs as well.
However, considering the number of changes that the series has undergone, especially in the ongoing Season 5, one character has been notably left behind in the narrative shuffle—Thomas Rainwater, portrayed by Gil Birmingham. As the High Chief of the Confederated Tribes of Broken Rock, Rainwater began as a pivotal figure representing Native American struggles and aspirations, but his storyline has seen little progress, leaving fans and the actor himself yearning for more.

Yet, as the show progressed, particularly in the fifth season, Rainwater’s presence diminished drastically, reduced to a supporting role with minimal development.

Even Birmingham, who embodies the character with grace and nuance, has voiced his frustrations. Speaking toThe Playlist, he outlined his one condition to return as the character.
I love this character, I absolutely would. I think we all would. We’ve talked about what we would do pretty much across the board, everyone of the actors said, ‘We would do this thing as long as Taylor wanted to write for it.
While Birmingham did not delve into the lack of story progression on his own character, he still reserves plenty of hope for the overall sequel.

Despite the missed opportunities inYellowstone, Birmingham remains optimistic about the possibility of a spin-off focusing on Rainwater and his advisor Mo, played by Moses Brings Plenty. Well, it might be a personal bias, but I think it would be a wonderful spin-off. And there’s been discussion, you know, between me and Mo, my partner in this, to explore the Native side of [the] story and what would be going on in the on the reservation, and what the challenges are for that community. I’d love to see that. But, you know, I’m not the writer.
Such a series would not only provide Rainwater the depth and prominence he deserves but also shine a spotlight on the contemporary struggles and victories of Indigenous communities—a narrative often overlooked in mainstream media. Regardless, as long asTaylor Sheridanis able to write the characters back into his universe, Gil Birmingham has no qualms with respect to a potential return.
