The opening sequence of the newNetflixfilmWoman of the Hourcontains one of the most terrifying and shocking scenes in crime thriller history. A young woman, Sarah (played byPitch Perfect’sKelley Jakle), unburdens her ruminating regrets to a new friend and is subsequently attacked.

However, the perpetrator gives his victim life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation, only to attack her again.
On that note, let’s get right to the point:Anna Kendrick’sdirectorial debut is a thoroughly gripping and relevant crime thriller transcending the #MeToo film movement in powerful ways.Woman of the Hourexplores themes that extend well beyond what hides in the shadows or, for that matter, in plain sight.

Netflix’sWoman of the HourReview and Synopsis
Kendrick stars as Sheryl, a down-on-her-luck actress who cannot land a role despite her good looks, intelligence, and impressive Ivy League résumé. To get her face out there, her agent lands her a gig as a contestant onThe Dating Game, an American game show that hands out prizes such as objectification.
One of the contestants is Rodney Alcala (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’sDaniel Zovatto), who’s different from the others. His answers are calm, intelligent, and thoughtful. Sheryl is immediately attracted to his creative, quick-on-his-feet responses that foster an emotional connection and mutual respect.

The only problem is that it’s Rodney, not the inappropriate host (Unfrosted’sTony Hale, basing the character on Jim Lange), who is a serial killer who has evaded authorities for decades.

Anna Kendrick’sWoman of the Houris One of the Year’s Best Films!
Anna Kendrickhas crafted a crime thriller that ranks among the year’s best films. Kendrick works with a script from Ian McDonald (Some Freaks, Superman Returns) that layers the film with scenes of unwavering anxiety and almost unbearable tension, causing you to grip the armrest and never let go.
However, McDonald also infuses the film with dark comic relief that perfectly complements Kendrick’s ambitions. Yet, this misdirection eventually dawns on the audience, becoming sobering. Watch howKendrick’sSheryl apologizes to man after man when she has absolutely no reason to.

Woman of the Houris full of jaw-dropping revelations, such as the way Sheryl’s best friend Terry (Pete Holmes) guilt trips her over Sheryl’s rejection. The scene where Nicolette Robinson’s Laura kicks her boyfriend out of her car because of his skepticism. Not to mention the jaw-dropping moment when Laura feels society’s insignificance while waiting for the show’s producer.

Is Netflix’sWoman of the HourWorth Watching?
Woman of the Houris a masterful crime thriller and one of the year’s best films. Kendrick holds the viewer’s attention with a contextual experience unlike any other crime film this year. Watch the opening scene and try to deny that you didn’t feel shades of David Fincher’s Zodiac, then feel the hairs on your forearms stand at attention.
However, that’s not what will sell Netflix’s latest streaming sensation to fans and critics. This is a film that believes in women. Aaron Sorkin once wrote, “The things we do to women.” The history of rape myth acceptance, confirmation bias, and victim blaming not only has damaging effects in the long term but will also lead to continued victimization.

Woman of the Houris not your typicalserial killerretelling. Yes, Kendrick brings a gritty and terrifying mood to the genre that passes most. However, the nuances of McDonald’s script and Kendrick’s lens bring a perspective not to the killer but to society’s role regarding the victims, making this cinematic experience a benchmark of the genre.
