Following its reveal at The Game Awards, we’re getting more and more information aboutThe Witcher 4.
We already know thatCiri, not Geralt, is the lead protagonist, something developerCD Projekt REDhinted at in the past. Real fans, however, have more pressing questions, such as whether Gwent will make a return. CD Projekt RED has good news: don’t be surprised to see it come back inThe Witcher 4.

CD Projekt RED Explains Why Ciri Is The Protagonist Of The Witcher 4 And Not Geralt
CDPR explains why Ciri is the protagonist for The Witcher 4 and not Geralt, as the studio claims this has been decided long ago.
Speaking withEasy Allies, Game Director Sebastian Kalemba and Executive Producer Gosia Mitręga discussed the game’s reveal, including Gwent. “We all love the game,” Mitręga says. I don’t think anyone will be disappointed."

“It’s part of the experience,” Kalemba adds, “So absolutely. We also love Gwent.”
However, whether or notGeralt is the final boss of Gwent’s gameplayremains to be seen.

The Witcher 4 Recently Entered Full Production
With the game recently entering full production, CD Projekt RED admits they were playing according to fan expectations betweenThe Witcher 4and the upcomingThe Witchergame. The trailer is also a pre-render build, so while it’s not indicative of gameplay graphics, all assets are from the game.
“The experience we’re presenting are, more or less what you’re able to expect from the content in the game…this will all be experienced in the game. Not one-on-one since this is custom for the story…but this is from the game.”

Kalemba and Mitręga also hint that they’re referencing a cannon ending from past games that led to the events inThe Witcher 4. Since players had wildly different readings from past games, they admit that’s pretty tricky. Still, the team respects the franchise’s lore and is confident that seasoned players will love how the story progresses.
Over 400 developers are working together onThe Witcher 4, which begins a new trilogy separate fromThe Witcher 3’s gameplay. Despite the large team and big reveal, don’t expect to get your hands onThe Witcher 4anytime soon. Given thelaunch issues ofCyberpunk 2077, we expect CD Projekt RED to take their time and release the game when it’s truly ready.
