The infamous Oscars Slapgate controversy between Will Smith and Chris Rock sent shockwaves around the world. From dominating headlines and sparking endless memes to putting the actor’s career in jeopardy, the moment has gone down in Academy history for all the wrong reasons. Not only was Will Smith banned from the Academy for his outrageous actions, but his then-upcoming film,Emancipation, also faced uncertainty to the point that the actor had to ask people to not let the team’s hard work go to waste.

While this shocked the world, comedian Katt Williams believes that the controversy was staged, perhaps even more staged than Janet Jackson’s apparent wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl XXXVIII, but more on that later.
Was Will Smith’s slap a scripted event?
Known for his unfiltered opinions, comedianKatt Williamshas never shied away from speaking what’s on his mind, no matter how insane it just might sound to the listeners. For example, with all that has been going on aboutDiddyand his alleged “Freak Offs,” Williams once stated onClub Shay Shaythat“P Diddy be wanting to party, and you’ve got to tell him no.”
He also brought up the controversy that links Diddy toTupac Shakur‘s assassination in an interview withGQstating,“I don’t give a f*ck what job I end up being in, I don’t care how things go, if I can get a way to get you, that’s what I’m all about. I just don’t like you walking around scot-free.” He even called Diddy a“demon.”

Needless to say, Williams doesn’t believe in keeping his opinions to himself and when he showed up on theNaked with Cari Championpodcast, he had a lot to say aboutWill Smith‘s altercation withChris Rockduring the 2022 Oscars.

He wholeheartedly believes that it was all scripted – a way to increase the ratings. In his words,
If you’re gonna slap him, you just need the greatest guy, the bestest guy, the one who’s shown us him being on his best behaviour since the 90s. That guy is the one that will have to slap him in order for the type of rating we need…So, they killed this $20 million guy but they reached $60 million in benefits.

He also said,“I am in the production business. I understand what is worth doing for ratings.” The comedian’s perspective raises an intriguing question – Was Smith really just a mere pawn in a larger industry ploy or is this another Hollywood conspiracy theory? We just might never know!
What Happened with Janet Jackson during Super Bowl XXXVIII?
The Super Bowl took place on July 13, 2025, and while many may not remember much about the events of the night, no one can really forget what happened betweenJustin TimberlakeandJanet Jacksonduring their performance.
Jackson was wearing a black bodice and when Timberlake went ahead to pull off her bustier, he actually ended up ripping much, much more off. Thus, for a fraction of a second, Jackson’s bare brest covered by a npple shield was visible to the world. Thus began the controversy named,“N*pplegate.”

A spokesperson for Jackson, Stephen Huvane, later stated (viaParade) that this was nothing but“a malfunction of the wardrobe; it was not intentional … He was supposed to pull away the bustier and leave the red-lace bra.”

Jackson also revealed that the idea to have Timberlake pull off the bustier for a costume reveal was made after the final rehearsals. She apologized, stating,
The whole thing went wrong in the end. The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals. MTV was completely unaware of it. It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologize to anyone offended—including the audience, MTV, CBS and the NFL.

Despite the backlash, which was mostly directed towards Jackson, many people believe that the entire thing was staged and not really an accident.
Of course, the Internet is divided on the N*pplegate controversy even after 2 decades. What do you think? Was this a scripted moment gone horribly wrong or really just an accident?
