The debate over game preservation and piracy often stirs up a lot of varying opinions. Some say that it’s wrong to download games illegally, while others say it’s the only way to keep old games from disappearing forever.

Despite this, the game gained a decent following, especially since this was before the character’smovie of 2016, the character’s first proper comic-accurate depiction in mainstream media.
In 2015, the game got a remaster for PS4 and Xbox One, but like many licensed games, it was delisted in 2017, making it impossible to buy through official and digital channels anymore.

Fast forward to the month of August 2024, and the release ofthe MCU’s latest movie has sent the value of physical copies of thegame through the roof. On sites like eBay, you’re able to find the game listed for insane prices, with some sellers asking for nearly $50,000 for a PS4 copy.
Of course, these prices are highly inflated and unrealistic, and no one has bought them for that price yet, but they highlight the licensing problem. This is also the case with Activision’sSpider-Mangames, which faced similar delisting and inflation fates.
For many gamers, the only way to experience this title now is by paying these absurd prices or resorting to piracy.
The Case for Game Preservation
TheDeadpoolgame situation is just one example of a much larger issue in the gaming world. Many games, especially those tied to specific licenses,eventually get delisted and become nearly impossibleto find. When this happens, the only people who benefit are the sellers who jack up the prices to unrealistic amounts on physical copies.
Without proper preservation, entire pieces of gaming history can be lost, and fans who want to experience these games are left with very few options that are justified.

The same thing applies to film preservation as well, and thankfully, there are plenty of organizations that go the extra mile to preserve and even remaster movies that are up to a century old.
As we move into the next generation of consoles, PlayStation and Xbox should take the preservation of these games even more seriously. They should work on making sure that older titles remain accessible, whether through backward compatibility, remasters, or re-releases.
