The Mandalorian, which premiered in November 2019, is considered to be one of Disney+’s major successes. Gina Carano as Cara Dune, a former soldier from the Rebel Alliance, added strength and an interesting look to the part, having been a professional MMA fighter.

However, the entertainment industry has for a long time shown that how an actor behaves off the set influences his or her projected career. In today’s social media age, people need to be extra aware of personal expression and professional consequences, and a similar situation led to one of the most-discussed firings in theStar Warsuniverse.
Gina Carano’s social media post caused her exit fromThe Mandalorian
Gina Carano’s time onThe Mandalorianwas cut short in February of 2021 due to a social media post that did not go down well. The mixed martial artist-turned-actress shared a post comparing being a Republican today with being Jewish during the holocaust, and as expected, it was met with a backlash from netizens and the entertainment industry.

According toForbes, Carano shared a post online that stated,
Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children…Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?

Although the post was deleted, it went viral through screenshots. #FireGinaCarano campaign erupted online, and the actress was fired afterThe Mandalorianseason 2.
This was not the first time Carano got herself into trouble with her comments on social media. In November 2020, she had already received backlash for her tweets about the use of face masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the alleged voter fraud in the presidential election in the United States in the same year.

The Hollywood Reporterreported that Lucasfilm had been closely observing the situation, and one of the sources revealed,“They have been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw.”Lucasfilm fired Carano, as one of their spokespersons said,
Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm, and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.

Also, her talent agency, UTA fired her from the list of their represented talents. It was reported that the studios had intended to promote Carano as the leading lady of her own Disney+ show, but they canceled such plans after her social media posts.
Gina Carano fights back with Elon Musk’s support
Carano filed a $75,000 defamation lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm with the help of none other thanElon Musk. The actress accused the studios of wrongful termination and retaliation in a59-page civil suitfiled in the California federal court.
The lawsuit claims Carano was fired“because she dared voice her own opinions… and stood up to the online bully mob who demanded her compliance with their extreme progressive ideology.”It also complains that, unlike her male co-stars, who made similar political posts, she had to suffer the consequences.

Elon Musk publicly supported Carano’s legal fight. Moreover, X publicly supported Gina Carano in astatement.
As a sign of X Corp’s commitment to free speech, we’re proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano’s lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X and the ability to work without bullying, harassment, or discrimination.
Carano has always been appreciative of her support, especially Musk. She toldThe Hollywood Reporter,“I think it’s pretty incredible what he is doing,”saying he made the right choice of taking on“massive injustice battles”instead of using his money“buying islands and building bunkers.”

Her complaint is more than a case of demanding monetary damages. Carano is also requesting the court to compel Lucasfilm to cast her once again, proving she is ready to challenge what she considers unfair dismissal.
How is Gina Carano vs. Disney and Lucasfilm going on?
More recently, Carano gained a major upper hand when US District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett rejected the motion after Disney attempted to dismiss the lawsuit. As perThe Independent, the studio had argued that Carano’s decision“to publicly trivialize the Holocaust by comparing criticism of political conservatives to the annihilation of millions of Jewish people was the final straw.”
Carano shared withThe Hollywood Reporterthe emotional response she had to get after the termination of her contract. She said,“I just laid down and cried and cried,”revealing how she came to find out about her dismissal through the released statement.
I curled into a fetal position. It’s not that I didn’t think that something like that could happen. It was that I couldn’t imagine they would put out this horrendous statement about me after working with me — the most powerful entertainment company in the world saying that about me.
The legal fight goes on as Carano claims another win in October 2024. In her post onX, she wrote,
After the Judge DENIED Disneys request to DISMISS my case, Disney requested permission to immediately appeal that decision to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and delay all discovery while that appeal takes place.
