My father was told he had to drop out of school in eight grade to pick cotton with my grandfather, and I’m Captain America. When you look at it that way, it hits different.

At one point during his interview, he talked about his father, Willie Mackie. The actor confessed that when his father was in eighth grade, it was suggested to him that he should quit and work with Mackie’s grandfather to pick cotton.

The moment seemed to have been very formative for Mackie himself, as he pointed out that his family has come a long way from the financial difficulties that they faced decades ago. Now being a father of four, he is very well off and holds the title of one of the most respected and beloved superheroes of all time.

Anthony Mackie looked at his father as a very big inspiration

Long before the fame that he has today, Mackie gave an interview with DIYLife (viaWaybackMachine), where he talked about his father. He revealed that Willie Mackie was a carpenter and a roofer, having owned a roofing business.

Despite his success in his later life, the trials and challenges that he experienced in his early years seemed to have had a very great affect on Mackie’s late father. The business that he build was a product of very hard work and challenges, continuing to work just as hard even after he got the security.

My dad was very successful because he worked harder than everyone that worked for him.

The actor also revealed that both he and his brother would work for their father for three years, which would have certainly contributed to his grounded personality. Willie Mackie passed away in 2005, but one can imagine that he would be very proud of his son for what he has achieved today.
