Hundreds of financially struggling people competing with each other in deadly and twisted versions of children’s games sounds like an unlikely concept. But that is exactly the premise ofSquid Gamewhich had the world in a chokehold when it first released.

Hwang Dong-hyuk’s survival thriller Korean TV series charmed audiences across borders with its unique concept. The show earned massive critical acclaim and applause from the viewers but people still found things to complain about. Some people were ticked off due to the level of violence in the show, and so demanded a tamer second season. However, the creator has a perfect response to that narrative.
Why was violence an integral part of the plot
Hwang Dong-hyuk‘sSquid Gamequickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched TV series when it premiered internationally in 2021. People were enamored by the eerie children’s game competition that became a battle of survival for its contestants.
Squid Game Season 2: When Is It Coming Out? Release Date, Cast, and More Details
The first season may have concluded with Seong Gi-hun (portrayed byLee Jung-jae) winning the bag but looks like the games are not over. The winner would be back again in the second season to compete with new players in the death arena.
The show may have received 3 Golden Globes and multiple Emmy Awards but some still had apprehensions. One major complaint from fans was about the excessive level of violence and bloodshed shown in the series. This even led to many requesting for the makers to tone down the brutality for future seasons.

So violence is basically like a vehicle or medium to show the characters’ desperations and their backstories, which are even more heartbreaking than the violence themselves.
But, the lead actor doesn’t agree with that criticism as he feels that violence is a very important weapon for the plot. Speaking toMetro, theDeliver Us from Evilactor revealed that the savageness shown in the show was essential to exploring the character’s psyche.

I think that when it comes to the level of violence or brutality that is happening to those in the actual world, what happens to the weak… – is it really less brutal than what you see in Squid Game? My answer to that would be it is not.
The director further backed his statement by revealing that it was a metaphor for the injustices faced by the unprivileged at the hands of corrupt authorities and a compromised society. He justified the use of that intensity in the show to accurately allude to the conditions of people in the real world.

What’s next for the anticipated series?
Dong-hyuk didn’t specify if the next season would be increasing the level of goriness, leaving that to be judged by the viewers. Gi-hun’s return to the deadly game might suggest possible changes to the narrative, but nothing is confirmed yet.
