A Rock Climber Climed The 366 Foot Tall Sphere in Las Vegas Recently

According toThe Washington Post, a rock climber was arrested on Wednesday after attempting to climb the Sphere at the Venetian, a 366-foot tall entertainment arena near the Las Vegas Strip, as revealed by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Authorities responded to reports of the incident around 10:10 a.m. Maison Des Champs, 24, was arrested and charged with destroying property worth more than $5,000 and conspiracy to destroy private property, as per online jail records.

Des Champs, who has not yet responded to requests for comment, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center, where he remained in custody as of Wednesday night, according to jail staff.

According to theLas Vegas Review-Journal, Maison Des Champs ascended to the top of the spherical venue without a rope or harness. A friend, Tim Clement, revealed that Des Champs had planned the stunt for a month, acknowledging the potential legal consequences based on past detentions. Des Champs was previously arrested in 2021 for climbing the Aria Hotel in protest of COVID-19 mandates.

In a news conference on Wednesday, Sheriff Kevin McMahill referred to the attempt to scale the building as a “publicity stunt.” The incident took place as the city geared up for nearly 400,000 visitors on Sunday, February 11, with theSuper Bowlbetween the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers set to be held at Allegiant Stadium.

The Las Vegas Sphere is truly one of the most impressive man-made monuments of all time. The Sphere has been a host to tons of concerts, especially for U2. Not only that, but they have promoted major events in the Sphere as well, which includes the upcoming Super Bowl.

According toESPN, the UFC will be hosting a major event at the Las Vegas Sphere on September 14. This date aligns with Mexican Independence Day celebrations on the 16th. The UFC Las Vegas Sphere will mark the organization’s second Mexican Independence Day event, following a successful debut last September.
