After waiting for ages to get a newStar TrekTV Series, countless Trekkies were jumping with excitement, whenStar Trek: Discoverywas announced. However, upon the show’s airing of the very first episode, the show met with an unusually high degree of backlash from its viewers.
Every single thing about the new show was hated by the fans. From the character’s uniforms to the show’s storyline, everything was a point of criticism. Moreover, some fans have also pointed out howDiscoverywas a political show, and unlikeGene Roddenberry’soriginal show, the actors were politicizing the series.

While fans hate Sonequa Martin-Green in the show, she made the show somewhat bearable. However, while speaking withSFX magazine, the actress admits the show’s weak start and gave a candid answer on the series’ poor run.
To be honest with you, no, we did not have it from the start. We had a troubled start. From what I understand, every iteration has a challenge before them at the beginning. I do believe that we were kind of on wobbly legs. We were walking with purpose and intention and passion, and trying to walk with excellence as much as we possibly could, but we were still wobbling. We really were.
Sadly,Discoverycould not recover its lost fans, Martin-Green believes that the show started doing well from the 3rd season of the show.
Sonequa Martin-Green Believes Season 3 Was The Turning Point inStar Trek: Discovery
There’s no shred of doubt thatDiscoveryhas divided the Trekkies because some believed it was as good as the other chapters in the franchise, but some would not agree. The 2017 show had its problems because it deviated from the original show, often preferring high-action drama to a thought-provoking storyline that the original fans hold dear to their hearts.
However, Sonequa Martin-Green believes that such qualities made the show stand out and season 3 was the turning point in the series. During the same interview, Martin-Green stated that the show found its“distinct identity in season 3,”making it jump past any otherStar Trekseries. She said,
I feel personally that we found our distinct identity in season 3 when we separated from the timeline, when we jumped ahead past where any ‘Trek’ had ever gone. We were able to establish ourselves in a new way at that point. I really appreciate where we were placed. I appreciate all those connected tissues, but I also appreciate that we were able to build anew, because I believe every ‘Trek’ has a responsibility to do that.
She further added, that the true essence of the franchise is that the show keeps“pressing forward,”she admits that the show was somewhat off in the first 2 seasons but found its rhythm from the 3rd season onwards.
If you want to hold true to the essence of ‘Trek’ itself then you have to keep pressing forward. You have to keep encouraging people to look forward, look forward, look forward. So I feel that we really sunk into who we were supposed to be by season 3. We built off seasons 1 and 2. I even love how we stay connected, even through seasons 3, 4 and 5 — we never lost it. We never lost where we came from. But we also found so many new things. We found new life.
Nevertheless,Discoveryremains a controversial topic among the fans of the franchise, which has divided them as some viewers prefer something fresh to the franchise.
