Writer-director Alex Garland recently premiered his latest filmCivil Warat the 2024 South by Southwest Film Festival. During aQ&A sessionafter the film’s premiere, Garland explained that the decision to keep the conflict ambiguous was intentional. He said:
“The film is intended to be a conversation, so it doesn’t assert too much.”
At the same time, Garland added that he did not want the film to explain everything beat by beat, and instead opted to leave things for viewers to interpret themselves.
“We don’t need it explained. We know exactly why it might happen. We know exactly what the fault lines and pressures are.”
Garland made the above statement explaining his decision not to lay out the politics of the world in which the story takes place. He stated that he wanted viewers to apply their own understanding of polarization to deduce certain aspects of the film while leaving the politics of it vague and unexplained.
