Before the release of the film, the world criticized the look of the Joker for wearing a red nose that clowns usually wear. In an interview withCollider, the director gave reason on why he liked that particular look.

“We went through 20 iterations of other things, like what he wore and 20 variations of what Murray’s set looked like, but weirdly with Joker, we settled pretty quick. We wanted it to clearly be inspired by him being a clown.”
He further continued,

“You know, some people were going crazy when we released the makeup test a year ago about, “Why does he have a red nose? And all that,” obviously not knowing at the time that his look was inspired by his clown look, you know what I’m saying?”
