When it comes to adapting a high-energy and surreal manga likeDandadan, there are unique challenges that even the most experienced directors might find daunting. Known for its fast pace, explosive action, and richly detailed panels,Dandadanwas widely considered “unadaptable” for the screen due to the sheer energy and dynamism present in its original form.

However, director Fuga Yamashiro and producer Kohei Sakita took on this ambitious task, crafting an anime that could honor the source material’s intensity and visual punch. One guiding principle, handed down from Science SARU co-founder Masaaki Yuasa, helped Yamashiro to overcome the complexities ofDandadan‘s pace and energy, creating a final product that captures the manga’s original spirit.

The Challenges of AdaptingDandadaninto Anime Medium

Created byYukinobu Tatsu,Dandadanis a manga that defies the preexisting norm in the Shonen genre, blending supernatural horror, sci-fi, and slapstick humor in a way that is as unpredictable as it is exciting. On the page, it nearly seems animated due to its quick pacing and highly detailed panels, which was as exciting as worrisome for the series’ director Fuga Yamashiro.

In an interview withAnime Trending, he revealed that when he first read the manga, he realized that a distinctive style of animation would be needed to convey its“energeticness”— one that would strike a balance between the story’s rapid pacing and slow and tense periods, which are crucial to avoid sensory overload. To achieve this, he utilized Masaaki Yuasa’s mantra, as he remarked,

The timing of everything was important, like which scenes do we want to do quick-quick-quick-show-show-show, and which scenes do we want to spend time on. The ups and downs are really important to this anime. A long time ago, director Yuasa told me, “Timing is everything!” and I really felt that working on this anime.

Sakita, echoing Yamashiro’s sentiments, believes that the strength of theDandadananime lies in its tempo and seamless blend of various artistic and technical elements, from animation and voice acting to sound and music.

For Yamashiro, Science SARU co-founderMasaaki Yuasastands as a major influence and an inspiring figure. Describing Yuasa as “the kind of director that I want to be”, Yamashiro notes that Yuasa’s emphasis on timing and his unconventional storytelling methods served as guiding principles for theDandadanadaptation.

Elements That BroughtDandadan‘s Vibrant Universe to Life

Another unique feature of theDandadanadaption is its creative sound design, which Fuga Yamashiro created to go with the series’ lively and chaotic tone. Yamashiro thought it was crucial to use comparable noises to arouse nostalgia because Yukinobu Tatsu, the manga’s author, likes old Ultraman and other tokusatsu (special effects) series.

The series combines modern audio elements with traditional tokusatsu-inspired sound effects to provide a variety of soundscapes that heighten the anime’s impact. On the other hand, producer Sakita emphasized that every aspect of the anime, including the voice acting and editing, was carefully done to maintain themanga’s intensity and emotional range.

The voice actors forDandadan‘s characters were chosen not only for their ability to capture the characters’ personalities but also for their skill in conveying the rapid shifts between comedy, drama, and horror that define the series.

The manga’s intense energy and emotional depth are perfectly captured in Yamashiro and Sakita’s adaptation ofDandadan, proving that even the most challenging series can be effectively brought to life with the right approach. TheDandadananime is more than just a tribute to the original; it’s an evolution of it, embracing all of its quirks and intensities to deliver a unique experience that stands on its own.
