Sony Acquires Yet Another Game Studio, Announces New Division Focused On Mobile Games

Now thatHelldivers 2has reached scathing levels of success, PlayStation fans have been wondering if Sony plans on snagging up Arrowhead. It wouldn’t be out of the blue, as they tend to acquire studios they’ve worked closely with over the years, such as Bluepoint and Housemarque.

Arrowhead CEO Shuts Down PlayStation Acquisition Rumors

Rumors of PlayStation acquiring Arrowhead have been swirling recently. The first instance cropped up on thegaming forum NeoGaf, which claimed that Arrowhead has been acquired, and an announcement from PlayStation is forthcoming. The rumor had some credence to it, as it was by the same person who leakedGhost of Tsushima‘s PC announcement.

However, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt, who has been frequently engaging with fans sinceHelldivers 2‘s launch, quickly debunked the rumor on X/Twitter.

This is the first I hear of this… And that’s a good indication that it’s fake.

Replying to a tweet that supports an Arrowhead acquisition by PlayStation but mentions inappropriate timing due to the recent layoffs across the company, Pilestedt stated that he’d never heard any rumors about a buyout, and that it’s a good sign. He capped it off with a cheeky remark about the logo in the image being very old.

PlayStation Might Be WatchingHelldivers 2Closely

This is confirmation as definitive as you can get about Arrowhead not being acquired by Sony. Pilestedt alsoconfirmed in a separate threadthat the studio is still independently owned by him and the founders. So for anyone hoping they’d be added to the PlayStation Studios family followingHelldivers 2‘s success, tough luck.

However, this doesn’t mean that Arrowhead will continue operating independently for the foreseeable future. A PlayStation acquisition could still be in the cards, since the console maker isactively pursuing live servicegames, which require long-term player retention.

Sony could just be monitoring that exact statistic forHelldivers 2. If the co-op shooter manages to retain its current momentum 6 months or even a year from now, PlayStation could make a move on Arrowhead and secure them before any other publisher does.

Conversely, PlayStation owns theHelldiversIP, so if Arrowhead wanted to develop a third entry in the series, it could be used as a bargaining chip for an acquisition.

However, this is all just speculation. The current sentiment shared by players and the studio’s founders alike is for Arrowhead to remain independent, with the point driven home even harder by the shocking layoffs affecting the games industry at large, even PlayStation.

For those still hoping for an acquisition, the odds aren’t stacking up particularly well. However, no one knows what the future holds, especially in the games industry where consolidation has been intensely ramping up lately. All we can hope for is Arrowhead’s continued success and democracy for all.
