During the table read of the final season ofHow I Met Your Mother,the entire cast was holding back tears while trying to read through the script. In an interview withE! OnlineRadnor revealed that he knew that the ending was coming eventually.

They had mentioned to me the twist about the mother in the first season, and I kind of put it out of my head.
He further continued,

I didn’t know if they would actually want to come back to it and do that, especially after Cristin, because she was so wonderful and the fans seemed to really take to her. So I asked them, ‘Are you guys still doing that?’ And they said ‘yeah’.
The series ran for 9 seasons and drew critical acclaim and millions of fans until the final episode aired. Although there are some who still appreciate the poetic end of Ted Mosby, others felt that Tracy should not have died.
