But in real life, Sheen wasn’t exempt from the consequences of Harper’s lifestyle, as his substance abuse issues and his rant against showrunner Chuck Lorre would contribute to his abrupt firing.
Interestingly, even though he lost the gig that made him one of the highest-paid actors in television at the time, it wasn’t a complete downward spiral for Sheen’s career. Despite his tumultuous reputation off-screen, FX signed the actor for Anger Management.

Although the top brass at the network was banking high on the show, Sheen on the flip side wasn’t quite assured, as he bluntly admitted (viaThe New York Times) that the investors were taking a major risk, given his substance abuse history.

In contrast to his concerns, the sitcom did commence on a high note, amassing a whopping 5.74M views (viaTHR) on its debut.
Chuck Lorre made sure the show went on after the Charlie Sheen debacle
While Charlie Sheen was seemingly riding high off the success of his new sitcom, Chuck Lorre and Co. on the other hand were attempting to weather the storm by incorporating Ashton Kutcher as the new lead. However, opposed to Lorre’s optimistic viewpoint on the major change, his co-creator Nick Bakay was taken aback by the major swing (viaVariety).
It was a thunderbolt. You know when you’re onto something good, because it scared me. But also, I know Chuck well enough to know all that this meant. I knew everything that was below the waterline of that iceberg. And I knew there was a part of him that was ready to do something to turn that page on a more significant level.
AlthoughTwo and a Half Mendid eventually find its footing in the following years, Sheen’sAnger Managementnever managed to reach thenetwork’s expectationspast its beginning.
