Prime Video’sThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of PowerSeason 2 Review and Synopsis

As we know, the series takes place in the Second Age of Middle-earth. Set thousands of years before Tolkien’sThe Lord of the RingsandThe Hobbit, the last time we saw the beloved characters, their loyalties are tested. In particular, Galadriel (the wonderfulMorfydd Clark) is tricked by Sauron, who manipulates the Commander into doing his will.

Another Sauron (Charlie Vickers, a chameleon) target of Sauron’s is Celebrimbor (The Crown’sCharles Edwards), the master craftsman who created three rings, dividing the Elvish high command on their proper use. Galadriel wants to use them to save their people, but Elrond (breakout star Robert Aramayo) sees a bigger, more holistic, and almost humane picture for Middle-earth.

And, of course, we have some fun subplots, like “The Stranger” (Daniel Weyman), his origins, and his relationships with the Harfoots. However, some of the magical elements of that community are put to the side this season, replaced by the most interesting supporting characters: the Dwarves, led by Durin (Owain Arthur) and Disa (Sophia Nomvete). Their marriage is the strongest sinceFriday Night Lights,Eric and Tami Taylor!

Prime Video’sThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of PowerSeason 2 Is a Spectacular Triumph!

Based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s classicThe Lord of the Ringsand several of his appendices, the second season of this legendary work is a spectacular triumph. The season’s bookends, particularly the magnificent achievement of the three-episode premiere, are thrilling, filled with Easter eggs, winks, and original takes that captivate the audience.

Notably, the opening scene, featuringSlow Horsesguest starJack Lowden, dives deep into Sauron’s backstory and is an extraordinary example of origin storytelling through visceral flashbacks. While the first season struggled with stagnant exposition, this season liberates itself with dynamic character development.

Also, credit should be given to the creators, who seamlessly expand on minor characters while effortlessly introducing new ones. There is the issue of one publicized cast member leaving the series,Nazanin Boniadi, is handled with depth and poignancy. (The actress gave up the role to step away and pursue activism for women’s rights in Iran.)

Is Prime Video’sThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of PowerSeason 2 Worth Watching?

The other bookend is another reasonThe Rings of Poweris worth watching: The season focuses on the Elven city of Eregion. For those who don’t know, the story will not run spoilers. The battle ends the season and is a magnificent achievement that combines the novel’s spirit with jaw-dropping special effects, especially for television. I’m not sure a penny was spared in the Battle of Eregion.

The performances are great, including the chameleon-like Vickers, the star-making turn by Aramayo, and Clark, who brings a breathtaking combination of beauty, strength, and depth to a role, not to mention that physical demand of the action scenes, in which upon the series hinges.

The second season ofThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powerhas breathtaking action reminiscent ofThe Two Towers, with an ominous atmospheric tone and morally complex despair akin toThe Empire Strikes Back. The season is filled with twists, revelations, and major surprises for loyal and new fans alike. You’ll love every second of it.
