The film tells the story of a Rebel spy group stealing the plans for the Death Star, essentially serving as a prequel to the events of the 1977 film. However, fans will be surprised to learn that the film was almost engineered backward by using footage from other movies based on an idea from an effects supervisor. Here is everything you need to know about the surprising wayRogue Onewas conceived.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Storywas made from footage from other films

Rogue One: A Star Wars Storywas directed byGareth Edwardswith Tony Gilroy hired to help with the film’s reshoots. It emerged as a critical and commercial success,grossing$1.059 billion at the global box office. As a result, it is widely regarded asone of the best movies in the space opera franchise.

In an interview withYahoo, the film’s three editors John Gilroy, Jabez Olssen, and Colin Goudie broke down the process of working on aStar Warsproject. The trio revealed that the film took an unconventional approach as there was initially no screenplay to begin with.

There was no screenplay, there was just a story breakdown at that point, scene by scene. He got me to rip hundreds of movies and basically make ‘Rogue One’ using other films so that they could work out how much dialogue they actually needed in the film.

Goudie made the above statement, revealing that he spent almost three months creating a mock reel for the movie.

The editor explained that based on the mock reel, which ripped footage from hundreds of other movies, including previous entries in the franchise, the creative figured out how much time each sequence would require and then worked on filling in the dialog where necessary. On the surface that sounds like a backward idea but it certainly worked wonders in the end.

Rogue Onewas the brainchild of aStar Warseffects supervisor

While the approach to craftingRogue One‘s screenplay was unconventional, to say the least, the concept itself has a very interesting origin. VeteranStar Warseffects supervisor John Knoll originally came up with the idea of a group of Rebel spies stealing the plans for the Death Star.

I started thinking about what might be fun stories to tell in the Star Wars universe that might make a good one-hour episode.

Knoll made the above statement (viaVanity Fair), revealing that he first thought of the idea based on the opening crawl from the 1977 original film directed byGeorge Lucas.

The effects supervisor explained that when he was wrapping up work on thefinal installment in the prequel trilogy, he learned of development for a live-action series set in the galaxy far, far away. While the TV series never took off, Knoll eventually pitched the idea to Kathleen Kennedy after Disney acquired Lucasfilm. Ultimately,Rogue Onebecame arguably the best film in the franchise and fans have Knoll to thank for it.
