George Lucas is no less than a visionary for creating the epic sci-fi world ofStar Wars. From the immersive narrative to intriguing characters, the franchise has become a staple part of popular culture today. Yet, it does not seem to be as well received and revered under Disney as it was under Lucas’s leadership, and fans have been for years hating Disney for the way it has handled the space epic.

While the franchise continues under the leadership of Disney, after Lucas sold the franchise to the Mouse House in 2012,fans have found several issueswith Disney’sStar Warsprojects. Despite oftensupporting the giant media house, Lucas too feels he has lost control of the saga afterStar Wars: The Force Awakens.

Speaking at aVirtual Speakers Series, Lucas was asked about how the struggle for racial justice would affect the franchise moving forward. And he remarked,

“Uh, I don’t know. I mean, I’ve kind of lost control of Star Wars, so it’s going off in a different path than what I intended. But the first six are very much mine, and my philosophy…  And, you know, the first three basically tell you how democracy turns into a dictatorship and you end up with a tyrant, the Emperor. It’s very important now, where we are now in our political history.”

Although his influence can be felt in the Disney movies and projects, fans have remarked that they seem more like a copy of the original six movies by Lucas. Star Warscontains several amazing movies and series, yetStar Wars—Episode VII: The Force Awakensis counted among the best movies of the space opera saga. Starring the likes ofDaisy Ridleyand more, the movie grossed $2.071 billion (viaBox Office Mojo) worldwide and received impeccable criticalreviews.

Yet George Lucas is not fond of the movie, and back in 2015 in aninterview with Charlie Ross, described the movieas sort of a break-up with the saga.

“They said, ‘We want to make something for the fans’….They decided they didn’t want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing….They weren’t that keen to have me involved anyway… And so I said, ‘Okay, I will go my way, and I’ll let them go their way… I love [the original ‘Star Wars’ films], I created them, I’m very intimately involved in them, and I sold them to the white slavers that take these things and…”

Even Bob Iger, Disney CEO in his memoirThe Ride of a Lifetimerevealed how Lucas felt the movie lacked any originality or any leaps forward and was not happy with it at all. While Lucas since seems to have made his peace with Disney, fans don’t seem too keen on letting the studio off the hook anytime soon.
