Rockstar Games has confirmed what we’ve been thinking:Grand Theft Auto 6won’t be releasing in 2025. The studio confirmed the delay today and said the highly anticipated game is due onMay 26, 2026.
The announcement isn’t really a shock, aswe even held a pollin which most people voted for the game to be released in 2026. But the fact that a release date is tied to it is.

Rockstar’sannouncementstates, “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto have been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.”
The studio added that they are using the extra time to deliver the quality gamers expect and deserve, adding, “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
Given how much people anticipate GTA 6, this doesn’t hurt the game. The real winners are the video game publishers, who now have a wide-open Fall 2025 window to release their big games. Understandably, some publishers have yet to decide on a release date for their games.They’re avoiding releasing when GTA 6 will launchsince the game will swallow it whole, given its reach.

It seems Borderlands 4’srelease date change had nothing to do with GTA 6, which some have theorized is why the looter shooter’s release date was bumped up.
Even if we have a release date, many questions remain: Will the game cost $100, assome analysts thinkit will? Will we be getting a new trailer sometime this year, even if the game isn’t due for release in 2025? Will the July 17, 2025 release date stick?
I understand Rockstar doesn’t need to do any marketing or release any trailers, and the game would still sell a billion units. But I’m hoping we can at least get a new trailer to satiate the GTA 6 thirst. It’s been well over a year since we saw the game’sfirst—and only—trailer. Isn’t it time we saw more?
There is no word on a PC release just yet, but mark the date! According to Rockstar, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released on July 26, 2025, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
