Neil Gaiman’s fall from grace has left more than just the literary world shocked. There have been some horrible allegations against the author, which have caused adaptations of his works (such as theAnansi Boysmovie and the third season ofGood Omens) to be stalled, some of which he has offered to exit in hopes of keeping them going.

However, in the wake of these horrible allegations, fans have come to read his works in a completely different light, something that restructures the manner in which his protagonists are looked at.
The work specifically in focus isThe Sandman, the graphic novel magnum opus of theCoralineauthor. Initially an odd superhero from the forgotten panels of DC, the character was refurbished into a gothic facsimile of the author, at least when it comes to looks. Similarly championing women’s issues as the author, there is something odd about the character and his relationship with some women in his story, which might have been a reflection of the dark underbelly of Gaiman’s life that has now been laid bare.

The Sandmantreats its female characters pretty violently
Reddit has been set ablaze once again with the various issues that have come to light about Neil Gaiman’s private affairs. First coming to light in a podcast byTortoise Media, the stories that have come out about the author are downright disturbing.
However, fans have pointed out that the stories that the author has written align with how he has allegedly treated women in real life. One Reddit user, going by the handlerrrrrrredalertpointed out how uncanny the certain parts ofThe Sandmanare, when framed against the allegations that have been leveled at Neil Gaiman.

Madoc refers to a character in one of the stories set inThe Sandmanuniverse, one who is handed the muse of epic poetry in Greek Mythology, Calliope, as a gift. The character is shown to have great fame as a writer, all thanks to assaulting the Muse multiple times, all in a bid to be inspired. The user points towards how instead of Madoc, the original conflation of the author with The Sandman himself still makes sense, given that Dream is not absolved of some horrible things that he has done to women.
Neil Gaiman finally responded to the whole situation, months after the issue became public
Neil Gaimantook the time towrite about the entire situation in his blog. Gaiman believed that he has been emotionally unavailable at times, but reiterated multiple times that he was not part of a non-consensual intimate relationship. Gaiman also points out that the messages that the media has reviewed might have been read in the wrong manner, as he does not see them as abusive in any way.
The Beyond Comfortable Neil Gaiman Sexual Harassment Allegations Explained
The stark difference in how Gaiman conducts himself in public, and how he has been shown to have been portrayed in private by his accusers, has left a lot of people feeling manipulated by Gaiman.
While there are some who cannot help but see telltale signs of his dark desires in his works, there are others who believe that Gaiman’s work should be treated similarly to theHarry Potterseries: divorced from the author, still worthy of being good literature and culturally important, and nothing to do with the horrors that the author has allegedly visited on some people.

The Sandmanis streaming on Netflix.
