The Giant Alien And Larvae
While in the colony, Jacob learns thatCallisto used to be a mining colony. It is revealed the UJC eventually came through and wiped out the entire colony, supposedly because of an initial spread of the infection. Upon heading deeper into the mines, Jacob and Dani come across aresearch labthat wasn’t in the memories of the miners that Dani saw. A brief exploration of this lab reveals theUJC knew about the infection and was studying it.
On the other side of the research facility is agiant multi-eyed dead alien life form. It is explained through recordings that theminers of Callisto dug deep enough and awoke this creature, causing it to attack the miners. Out of defense, the miners were able to fight back and kill the alien before the UJC arrived to assist with the situation. After its death, it was noticed thecreature was full of Larvae. These Larvae were the same shoulder-hugging annoyances that hide inlockers or cheststhroughout the game. The Larvae are the carriers of the infection, latching onto human hosts and infecting them, turning them into Biophages.

These Larvae went on to infect the mining colony in the first outbreak many years before the events of this game. The UJC was able to hold back the infection by killing everyone and everything on Callisto, stopping the infection, and also keeping the secret of its existence. Despite the horror of the infection’s spread, theUJC decided to keep many Larvae alive in order to study the infection.
Europa And Black Iron Prison
After the initial outbreak in the mining colony of Callisto, both Europa and, later, Black Iron Prison experienced a similar outbreak. Jacob finds a box of medical supplies in the research facility, just like the one he was contracted to transport. Upon further investigation, he finds the medical supplies were just a ploy, and theboxes were shipping the Larvae to other planets. Jacob has a flashback remembering he, at one point, discovered the larvae, but being more interested in the payment of the job, ignored it and proceeded to make the delivery to Europa. This act led to the virus being delivered to Europa and the following outbreak being Jacob’s fault.
The Warden of Black Iron is there to study this infection, as he believes it to be the next step in human evolution. During the first outbreak, an “Alpha” appeared, maintaining some of their humanity while evolving into something stronger. This Alpha was later killed by those trying to stop the infection, but its body was moved to Black Iron Prison to be studied.Black Iron Prison was built on top of the colony to provide the researchers with endless test subjects for their studies of the virus. After many years without a breakthrough,The Warden caused the outbreak in Black Iron Prison in an attempt to create a new Alphathat can be studied and recreated by the UJC toevolve the human race.
