In 1991, after growing frustrated with his screenplays not getting adapted onto screen, he went back to novel writing. In his attempt to write another science fiction story, the idea of the first chapter ofGame of Thronesflashed in his mind. From there, the epic story of Westeros was born.

George R.R. Martin recalls the first scene that gave birth toGame of Thrones

George R.R. Martinlived offwriting short storiesfor quite some time, but when he realized the income from it was not enough to sustain life, he sought to write longer ones, apart from taking a couple of day jobs. There came a time when he decided to focus on his writing career, and it was on that fateful day in 1991 when he started what would become his legacy.

In his interview with60 MinutesviaCBS News, Martin revealed the scene where the Starks found the direwolf puppies in the summer snow was the first sequence he wrote.

That was the first scene that I wrote. Yeah. That scene came to me. And I wrote it in, like, three days. It just poured out of me.

He admitted the characters in his mind seemed very real that they haunted him, forcing him to grab a pen and put this thought onto paper. He knew the first sentence to write and what kind of setting it would be. As he let his imagination flow freely, he started asking questions about these characters’ lives. From there, the story progressed until he needed to list down the names of the Targaryen kings. Later on, he started drawing a map to aid him in his writing.

At the time, Martin did not plan for the story to evolve into a full-fledged novel series. “I thought it might be a short story,” he toldThe Guardian. As we know it, the idea blossomed into a spectacular tale that involved kings and queens, dragons, and white walkers, with themes of duty, love, betrayal, politics, and more. The one chapter spanned into five books with two more upcoming titles.

There is still no positive update onThe Winds of Winter

Martin’s upcoming sixth novel,The Winds of Winter, is obviously not finished yet. It has been more than a decade since he started writing it, but a lot of projects have taken up his time, mostly planned spinoffs of Westeros-based stories.

The famed fantasy writer isn’t as productive as before when it comes to writing his novels, and this is where fans draw their fear that he might actually never complete the series. But, still – who knows? He once said via hisblogthat when he’s finished, “the word will not trickle out, there WILL be a big announcement,” although he couldn’t say when and where.

Game of Thronesis currently available to watch on HBO.
