When the two-year time skip inOne Pieceended, fans expected Eiichiro Oda to re-introduce the Straw Hat Pirates with a banger narrative, and the manga creator lived up to the expectations by delivering the Fish-Man Island saga. Filled with intriguing mysteries, thrilling battles, and important characters, the Fish-Man Island Saga truly was one of the best storylines of the series.

However, even though the narrative was top-notch, there were still some controversies around the Fish-Man Island arc involving the story’s main villain, Hody Jones. Fans believe that Hody Jones was just a knock-off Arlong who tried to take control of the Fish-Man island and use it to enslave humanity forever.

While the manga portrayed the character brilliantly, the anime made some modifications to the character’s past that ruined his true personality. This was heavily criticized byOne Piecefans, as not only was this modification introduced through a filler, but it also changed the essence of the arc.

The True Theme of Hody Jones’ Character inOne Piece

Hody Jones’ character was built upon the hatred that the Fish-Man developed against the discrimination that received from humanity. He was the captain of the New Fish-Man Pirates, and just like Arlong carried evil intentions towards humanity. But his evil intentions didn’t originate from any personal experience of discrimination or abuse.

Hody Jones had the belief that the fish-men were the supreme race as they were stronger and faster than humans, and thus should have ruled them. These feelings were the result of the feud between the humans and fish-men and Hody in his own way wanted to carry this feud to the next level. He was so invested in it that he did not even care about thefuture of Fish-Man Island.

Although Hody never experienced any kind of abuse or hatred personally, his anger towards humanity was stronger than that of Arlong’s. Arlong was more inclined towards making them pay for their sins by making them work for him, while Hody straight-on wants to rule them and prove their dominance in theOne Pieceworld.

One PieceAnime Ruined Hody Jones’ Past

When the Fish-Man Island arc was introduced in theOne Pieceanime, the narrative showed a filler past of the antagonist where he was seen witnessing the abuse and discrimination against the fish-men firsthand. However, when he was asked about his intentions behind creating a ruckus, Hody revealed that he had no motivation whatsoever.

The creative liberty that the anime took ruined the villainous element of Hody’s character and went way off from what the manga portrayed him to be.

Hody Jones' Childhood

Thus, many fans deemed the filler as one of the worst filler scenes Toei Animation had ever done forOne Piece. It also hurt the reputation of the Fish-Man Island arc as one of the best arcs ofOne Piece.

If the anime had stuck with the original plot for Hody’s character, he could have potentially become a bigger villainthan Arlong. This was because his hatred was fueled by the experiences of others which made him even more evil than most of theOne Piecevillains.
