Taylor Sheridan has made the medium of television even more prestigious and versatile than was considered possible. The filmmaker’s latest projectLandmanproves his skills with a pen and shows how his innovative creativity – with a little nudge – can transcend that of the generic artistically-inclined man.

AlthoughLandmanhas featured an incredible arc of character growth and plot development within the little time that it has been on the air, Sheridan ensures that the audience gets immersed in every aspect of the show. Even in some parts of its reaching and over-the-top dramatization of the oil business, the series makes the audience want and demand more by the end of each episode.
Landmantakes Taylor Sheridan to the next level
Despite being a somewhat veteran and respected part of the entertainment industry,Taylor Sheridanhas ditched working for big-budget studios and blockbuster films in favor of telling socially urgent tales likeLandman. Inspired by Christian Wallace’s 2019 podcastBoomtownabout big oil, Sheridan crafts a story that teaches modern viewers a lot about a darker, wealthier, and shadier side of the world.
However,Landmandoesn’t just prove what it takes to run a business of liquid gold but also shows how messy and violent it can get to hold on to the business itself. Taylor Sheridan’s story takes that little thread of violence and blows it up in the series, considering howLandmanis after all fictional.

When it comes to fiction, however, the caricaturish Norris womenare not the only parts of the series that don’t make sense to the audience. Sheridan introduces plot threads fromBoomtownand snowballs the concept until it becomes a looming and inherent part of the story. The arc about cartels and their ties to the big oil industry is one of those over-the-top concepts.
Taylor Sheridan brings cartels to the oil industry
According toLandmanco-creator and writer, Christian Wallace, the series picks up many threads from its modelBoomtown, and builds on the concept, making it more exciting and entertaining for the audience to watch. Of the numerous plot points that make it so, the arc aboutBilly Bob Thornton‘s character having ties to the cartel is simply outlandish.
Landman Episode 9: Taylor Sheridan Can Finally Make Demi Moore a Central Power Player With Bombshell Jon Hamm Twist
While speaking toDeadlineabout the series, co-creator Wallace addresses the subject, saying:
I didn’t address the cartel issues very much in the podcast, but it is a real issue as far as the drug trafficking through that region. There’s oil theft, there’s equipment theft. It is kind of the wild west in certain ways out there. And so that part is accurate. The relationship between the cartel and [the fictitious oil business] M-Tex is fictional, but I suppose it’s in the realm of possibility.

Understandably, Taylor Sheridan takes the story a step further and makes it even more enjoyable, thrilling, and nail-biting by crafting fresh plot points about the series. The National Guard arc was entirely Sheridan’s creation. Impressed by the intricacy of his inventive storyline, Wallace says:
That is part of Taylor’s specialty, being able to take a scenario and drum up the action and the intensity to that level. I mean, he’s just so good at spinning a narrative up to its utmost height.

Landmanis currently rated at 79% onRotten Tomatoesand features a who’s who of stars, including Ali Larter, Jon Hamm, and Demi Moore. As of writing, there isno news of the series being renewedat Paramount for a second season.
