It’s been a few weeks since Microsoft decided to shut down Arakne Studios and Tango Gameworks. The gaming community was left sour by the closure of these established studios, especially after learning that they had more projects in development.

Larian CEO Explains How He Avoided Potential Mass Layoffs If Baldur’s Gate 3 Failed
Undoubtedly,Baldur’s Gate 3was one of the biggest hits of 2023. Larian’s master CRPG won endless Game of the Year awards amid stiff competition from Zelda: tears of the Kingdom and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The game completely altered the RPG genre and smashed all records known to gamers.
Baldur’s Gate 3was one of the biggest risks Larian Studios took, but it ultimately paid off in the end. However, if things go south for the studio in the future and they don’t make a title for quite some years, Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke, already has strategies to deal with the potential layoffs that could follow.

In an interview with Eurogamer,Vincke discussed the issue of layoffs and studios shutting down in the gaming industry and gave his own approach to how Larian aims to deal with the situation if it ever happens.
So, we built multiple fallback positions in case it was going to go wrong – before we started doing this. I have a minority investment, so I had that in my back pocket in case it was going to go wrong. So this was my baseline, otherwise I wasn’t going to take the risks that we took with Baldur’s Gate 3, because it was too much of a risk. So that’s actually also why I did it, or part of the reasons I did it. So there’s that.
According to Vincke, Larian has already crafted multiple fallback positions if things ever went wrong, even beforeBaldur’s Gate 3‘s release. This strategy allowed them to take risks with the fantasy title and deliver a successful game. Even if they don’t plan on releasing a game for the next 4-5 years, they can continue expanding and not have to lay off their employees.
Larian Studios Is Not Planning a Baldur’s Gate 3 Sequel or DLC
DespiteBaldur’s Gate 3‘s incredible success,it won’t get a sequel or DLC to expand on the game’s massive universe. Back in March, Larian Studios, during the 2024 Game Developers Conference, confirmed that it’s not planning to create any DLCs, expansions, or sequels for its hit game Baldur’s Gate 3.

Larian’s announcement left many disappointed, but it seems like the studio isn’t done developing new content for the base game.
