Steamusers are calling for Valve to fix the constant bot and troll spam from users attempting to farm awards. The platform’s comment section is often flooded with pointless comments merely attempting to receive awards from other users, which can then be transferred into Steam points.

Over on the Steam subreddit,a postwith over 1,500 upvotes at the time of writing has said that Steam awards “should never have been added.” The user then included an image of a recent Palworld patch note discussion where the comments were filled with hateful and homophobic remarks, many of which had been rewarded with multiple awards.

For the unaware, Steam allows users to gain a currency known as Steam points. The main way to gain these points is through buying games, DLC, hardware, applications, soundtracks, or in-game items. For every £1 you spend, you will receive 126 Steam points. These points can then be spent on animated avatars, frames, backgrounds, badges, and more.

While Steam points are mainly acquired through purchases, they can also be gained by community awards. “You can also get Steam Points if someone from the community grants an award to one of your user reviews or other uploaded content such as screenshots, videos, guides, or Workshop items,“Valve says.

The problem with this is that users are now abusing the awards system by spamming comment sections to receive awards from fellow community members, and users aren’t happy about it.

“It’s just points farming. The Jester award shouldn’t give any points to the recipients of the award. It would solve the problem,” Reddit userLickshawsaid.

One user noted that the whole idea of a point system completely ruins platforms. “Karma ruined reddit by making the VAST majority of posts be for karma, and not real opinions ot posts. And let’s not even get into the bots,” Reddit userRedditCeoForRealzsaid.

Other users pointed out that these farmers are nothing more than trolls and shouldn’t be given attention. But when your favorite game releases a new patch, wouldn’t it be nice to discuss the changes like civil human beings in the comment section? If Valve wants there to be any sort of community feel on the platform, it needs to stop rewarding trolls for spamming.
