Surveying planets inStarfieldcan be a long and tedious process, but an inquisitive player has stumbled across a new way to make the process a little simpler.
In a recentposton the Starfield subreddit, user Repulsive_Show_1664 revealed that it’s possible to obtain all of a planet’s survey data by discovering an abandoned research tower. These towers are randomly generated on each planet, so coming across one could take you some time, but it’s certainly a quicker process than scanning everything on the planet individually.

According to the user, these randomly generated research towers usually include a computer at the top, which allows the player to download the planet’s survey data when accessed. However, the trick doesn’t seem to be quite so easy, as there appears to be some random elements to it.
In response to the post, one user said, “It doesn’t seem to update the survey data immediately in the scanner once you find it though, I had to go to the planet map and press R to download survey data.” Whilst another user said, “Fairly sure this doesn’t give you all of the survey data. Ran into one and it only gave me 1 planetary trait and nothing else. So the reward probably varies.”
The results appeared to vary for different users. Others noted that although it didn’t give them all of the planet’s survey data, it only left one mineral for the player to survey, which still certainly saves a ton of time. However, as noted earlier, these research towers are randomly generated, so you could still end up spending some time attempting to locate one.
Starfield has only been out for a matter of days, but players are already discovering plenty of handy tricks. One user even discovered a way touse in-game physics to steal creditswithout being caught by the surrounding NPCs. Whilst others are discoveringhidden Skyrim references, ways toobtain rare suits, and even creating someuseful UI mods.
