When DMA Design was developing the firstGrand Theft Auto, the developers would come across a glitch that resulted in the police vehicles crashing into the player’s car instead of pulling them over. But instead of resolving this issue, creators David Jones and Mike Dailly decided to incorporate it into the game, thus giving rise to the Wanted system in the franchise.

Star Wars Outlawsto Incorporate Its Own Notoriety System

The decision to incorporate the wanted system into the game instead of fixing the bug turned out to be the right call, as it continues to define the franchise even decades after its inception. And it seems, the upcomingStar Wars Outlaws, which is set to be the first open-world game the franchise has to offer, will see a feature similar toGTA‘s notoriety system. For the unversed, in theGTAgames, you can earn from one to five or six stars, depending on the severity of your actions.

According to Julian Gerighty (viaEW), creative director ofStar Wars Outlaws, it will be a similar case in the first open-world game in the franchise, and fans are going crazy over it.

“There isn’t any more to it”: George Lucas Had a Strong Reason to End Making Star Wars after One Movie

If you’re noticed doing crimes, the Empire will chase you, and if things escalate, they’ll send the Death Troopers to hunt the players down.

Think the police in Grand Theft Auto,” Gerighty says of the concept, which has six levels of severity. If you start being seen doing crimes, that will start getting them to chase you. If you take some of them out, then it gets worse and worse, where they’ll send, at the ultimate level, Death Troopers — and maybe even worse.

Considering it’s a first in the franchise, fans are excited for the upcoming release, which will finally tell a story different than the typical Jedi origin or Rebels vs Empire.

Star Wars OutlawsIs a Breath of Fresh Air

Before COVID-19 resulted in the world shutting down for months, Massive Entertainment reached out to Lucasfilm a week prior to pitch a game, which was new for the IP. The Swedish video game developer wanted to follow a rookie scoundrel, who will have to fight to pull off a great heist while surviving amongst ruthless crime lords.

Speaking of its storyline, creative director Gerighty further detailed:

The pure scoundrel fantasy really takes flight when the galaxy is in chaos. The Rebels have lost the battle of Hoth and they’re on the back foot. The Empire is taking more and more power in the galaxy, but that creates a space for criminal activities and criminal syndicates. That’s really the time of the underworld.

With the single-played narrative set to follow Kay Vess, a street thief from Canto Bight, and her sidekick Nix, fans will hope the game will be more than just the standard Ubisoft experience.
