Sports Story, Sidebar Games' follow-up to its 2017 hit, Golf Story, has received a surprise release on theNintendo Switch eShopon December 23rd after being teased last month during Nintendo’sIndie World Showcase.
The game combines multiple sports with RPG elements and 16-bit graphics to create a unique experience. Sports Story features a universal sports rank for players to upgrade by doing various sports and activities which are not just centered around golf, like the game’s predecessor. Players will be able to enjoy bike motocross on BMX bikes, mini-golf, cricket, volleyball, fishing, and much more, but these sports will be intermingled into fantasy story elements like hitting floating balloons and pirate ships with your golf balls, riding beach unicorns, and many other creative activities.

There is also an increased focus on the RPG side of things this time, and players will be able to use various transportation methods like helicopters and trains to travel to dungeons and explore hunted houses with puzzles that rely on the incorporated sports gimmicks. There are even espionage quests and stealth infiltrations because the team wanted more ways to featurethe story side of Sports Story. The game is also teased by the developer to include a new version of the GALF mini-game, which was an NES homage to the original Nintendo Golf game with look-alike graphics and golf courses.
Sports Story was announced as a part of Nintendo’sHouse of Indie eventwhich has been ongoing for the past week, and daily news about various indie games was being shared on Nintendo’s officialYouTube channel. In addition to Sports Story, updates on Dust & Neon, Undying, and Sea of Stars were shown.
Sports Story is available to purchase now for $14.99, the same price as Golf Story, but the latter is now being sold at $6.99 as a part of Nintendo’s Indie World Holiday Sale until the end of the month. The game also supports multiplayer up to 4 players – according to theNintendo eShop page– which was an aspect that encouraged replayability in the previous game according to critics.
