Split Fiction is a co-op game that requires you to play with another person, for better or worse. The game will truly test your relationship with your partner, whether they are your significant other, best friend, or family member (I can contest to this).

8 Best Co-Op Sandbox Games

Building something pretty next to your friend’s dirt hut has never been easier than with these games.

You will need to work together throughout the game if you want to make any progress at all, and to do that, you’ll need to pick one of the co-op options.

Here’s a breakdown of what thedifferent co-op options are and how Friend’s Pass worksso you will know which one to pick during your playthrough.

Split Fiction - Online Play

What Is Friend’s Pass?

When you purchase the game, you are automatically able to allow another player to jump in with you. While you and your partner are free to buy separate copies, you do not bothneedto own it to play together.

Friend’s Pass is whatyour partner can download and use to access the game entirely free, so long as they are invited by you (or someone else who owns the game).

Split Fiction - Local Play

You will need to continuously invite your friend to play the game with you each time you start a new session. Players with the Friend’s Pass will only be able to access the game if invited by the player who owns the game.

Local Co-Op Versus Online Co-Op

One thing you will need to decide is whether you want to play the game online or in local co-op. These are two very different ways of experiencing the game that truly allow you and your partner completely different experiences.

Playing inlocal co-op means that you’ll be playing side-by-sideand sharing the screen and console. This way does not require the internet, so it could be better for some people if a steady connection is an issue.

Split Fiction - Host on Steam Servers

If you want to play with a non-local friend, you will need to do online co-op. With this option, you will both be playing on separate devices and your friend will need to install the Friend’s Pass version of the game.

Type Of Play

Description

Local Co-Op

Allows players to do couch co-op on the same console.

Online Through The Platform Servers

For players playing online on the same platform.

Online Through EA Servers

For players playing online cross-platform.

Online Hosted Through Steam (Or Console Servers)

Playing the game online through Steam means that both players are playing on a PC that has Steam. This option also works if you’re playing Xbox to Xbox, or PlayStation to PlayStation on their respective networks as well.

10 Best Co-Op Platformers

Gaming is always better with a friend.

You will be able to send invites via PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Steam, etc. to your friends who are on the same network.

This is arguably the better option for online play since you’ll be dependent on your console’s native network as opposed to relying on EA’s servers like cross-platform players will need to do.

Online Hosted Through EA’s Servers

The other option for online co-op is hosting the game via EA’s servers. This is the option that a large portion of players will need to pick for cross-play.

For this option, you are able to play with your friendseven if they are on a different platform than you. This means that you can own the game on PC, and they could download their Friend’s Pass on their PS5 and still play along with you.

If you are playing cross-platform, you will need to make sure to select this option and add your partner as a friend in EA’s system so that you can play with one another through their servers.

Which Version Is Better?

The truth is, neither way is necessarily better than the other;it is all up to what is the easiest for you and your partner. If you don’t have a stable internet connection, however, local co-op is the way to go. You’ll have the added benefits of in-person communication with your partner and no chance of network issues ruining your session.

As for whether you should pick through EA’s servers or other servers, again, it is completely up to the individuals.Though again, if you’re playing cross-platform, you will have to play through EA’s servers, no matter what.

My opinion is that local co-op is the way to go if you can do it. My best friend and I playedIt Takes Twoonline and thenSplit Fictionlocally, and the local co-op route was a lot more fun overall.

There’s just something about sitting there with someone while you argue over whose fault it is you keep dying. Plus, you’re within arm’s reach for when they decide to start killing you in the game on purpose.
