Modern Family’s men are okay. But the women? Damn. Whether it’s Ariel Winter’s Alex Dunphy or Aubrey Anderson-Emmons’ Lilu Tucker-Pritchett, every single female character was meticulously crafted to perfection. And, of course, when we talk about the women of television’s favorite family, we cannot leave out Sofia Vergara’s iconic Gloria Pritchett. Iconic. Classy. Drop-dead gorgeous.

Despite her unforgettable work as Gloria, Sofia Vergara faces criticism for her apparent over-the-top and stereotypical portrayal of Latina women. However, the actress couldn’t care less about the complaints as she had a very good reason to act the way she did – the women in her family who were raised in Columbia.
Sofia Vergara is Over the Haters
If you have seen any ofSofia Vergara’s interviews, you know that she has a thick accent that we love. While it may have been a little overpronounced inModern Family,Vergara clearly isn’t putting on a show. However, people who stand firmly against stereotypes call her out regularly for her accent in the show.
“I spent a lot of money because it’s very expensive”: Sofía Vergara’s Modern Family Casting Might Have Never Happened if She Had Succeeded in Her 1 Plan to Lose Her Latina Heritage
Despite what netizens might have to say about how she talks, Vergara moves ahead with her life without caring about their opinions. In fact, she doesn’t believe that there is anything wrong with being a stereotype.
In an interview with Hola (viaVanity Fair), Vergara stated that she based Gloria on her mother and aunt, Latina women who grew up in Columbia. Not only did their accent become a part of Gloria, but so did their love for colorful attires and shoes.

Vergara said,
What’s wrong with being a stereotype? Gloria’s character is inspired by my mom and my aunt. They are both Latina women who grew up in Colombia, like me. They love color, prints and shoes. I’m like that too: a voluptuous, intense, happy woman, who wants to get involved in everything with her partner to help.

She echoed these statements in an interview with TIME (viaCosmopolitan) where she stated, “I play her the way I see my mom and aunt behave as Latin women.”
However, just because Vergara doesn’t see a problem in these harmless stereotypes, it doesn’t mean that she is okay with it all. She recalled going up to the writers and having a little chat about what Columbians do and don’t.

I went to the writers and said, ‘We wouldn’t do this, Colombians don’t dress like that.’ I cannot blame the writers. You write what you know, and you cannot tell an American writer to write about some other culture and expect that it will be as natural as writing about an American person.
Clearly, Vergara is happy with the way she played Gloria, and so are her countless fans, who still consider her to be one of the most iconic female characters on comedy television.
