While Richard Donner’sSupermanpaved the way for the modern superhero landscape, ironically, no Superman movies since then have been able to replicate the essence of the Christopher Reeve-led film. On the flip side, the biggest Superman-centered story of this century so far was a complete antithesis to the Superman mythos despite Henry Cavill’s casting.
However, things are looking different with the DCU, and the recent poster for James Gunn’s upcomingSupermanhas fans further convinced that this will be a return to the character’s roots.

Interestingly, when the trailer forMan of Steeldropped, fans were convinced that it’d be an ode to the original’s themes, thanks to Jor-El’s inspiring monologue, in which he adds“Someday they will join you in the Sun”. But instead of building upon it, the story takes a complete 180 and ends with a rather bleak tone.

On the bright side, James Gunn has been adamant about celebrating Superman for what he is from the get-go, and the motion poster further highlights the contrast between him andZack Snyder‘s interpretation of the DC icon. The tagline“Look Up”, while simple, feels very reminiscent of Donner’s“You’ll believe a man can fly”, which is accompanied by a slowed-down version of John Williams’Supermantheme.
With the trailer set to debut this Thursday, the anticipation for the next big thing in the CBM landscape is at an all-time high, and given today’s climate, we can definitely use a hopeful role model.

On top of the very noticeable influence of Richard Donner’sSuperman,James Gunnisn’t shying away from drawing inspiration from other sources, includingAll-Star Supermanand the Silver Age comics. Elaborating on it, Gunn confirmed that the story will stand on its own as something unique, especially when it comes to Lois and Clark’s relationship, stressing (viaComicbook) that it’s unlike anything that has been done onscreen before.
So everything [influenced me], and then it’s just something that’s completely us. The relationship between David and Rachel’s [characters] on screen is something I don’t think we’ve seen in – I hate to say stuff like this – but I don’t think it’s something we’ve ever seen any superhero movie ever,
Although time will tell what the future holds for the DCU, given Gunn’s passion for the movie and DC, one cannot help but be hopeful.
