The new year brings new anime along, some phenomenally great ones at that, and this season’s shonen special isSakamoto Days. The first episode was released on Netflix on January 11th; however, the anime had been a heated topic of discussion long before its release. While the animation became the central focus of such discussions, a great aspect of the story that goes underappreciated is Taro Sakamoto.

Sakamoto is a great character in many ways, from his physical capabilities to his changed priorities in life. He has had a great glow-up, yet many characters in the series wrongly judge him based on his appearance. So here’s a reminder of why Sakamoto’s glow-up is the best.

Is the massive change in Taro Sakamoto a glow-down from his badass assassin days?

Taro Sakamoto was a feared assassin who has now become a family man. He has long forgotten his assassin days to be there for his family. In the process of doing that, he has let himself go and put on some weight. Compared to a shredded and menacing appearance, he now rocks a big belly and spends his days slurping on some instant ramen.

So, where did the cool Sakamoto go, and what’s up with this uncool glow-down? An X user pointed out why this new version of him defines glow-up in the best sense of the phrase.

The first episode begins with the assassin Sakamoto effortlessly eliminating a group of goons and their leader. By the end of the episode, he has turned into a loving father, husband, and the friendliest neighborhood handyman.Contrary to typical Shonen series and their protagonistswho get more muscular and menacing with every fight, Sakamoto has had the exact opposite journey.

Taro Sakamoto isn’t your typical shonen protagonist but no less than one

Sakamoto left behind the glory of being a feared assassin and his violent ways for many filling dinners with his family. He spends his days looking at the vain efforts of a young boy to get some freebies or help around the town. However, he’s still capable of defending himself and those he loves when the need arrives. The best part about his character is how his change was a result of a conscious choice.

Sakamoto Days Is Gunning for Anime of the Year With Action Sequences So Smooth Even Attack on Titan Fans Would Bow

The specifics of Sakamoto’s journey are unknown, but he can still go back to the assassin world with how skilled he is. Yet he chooses to do ‘uncool’ things for the sheer joy it gives him. He is surrounded by love and gets to have great meals. He treasures all of that over hurting people. His heavier version is much cooler than his assassin version, and there’s no doubt about it.

Sakamoto is an unconventional main character who doesn’t fit into the stereotypical definition of a shonen protagonist. Andit’s interesting to see him setting a new and great examplewith his adventures in Sakamoto Days anime.
