Final Fantasy 7: Rebirthplayers may have been surprised to find that the fan-favourite character Cid Highwind is not recruited in his home of Rocket Town, where he was found in the originalFinal Fantasy 7, but rather towards the end of the Gongaga region.
In a recentIGN interviewwith Naoki Hamaguchi, we learned why. According to the veteran Final Fantasy developer, Rocket Town was cut from Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth so the team could focus on expanding other areas, like Gongaga.

“So, as for Rocket Town, this was also not a part of Nojima-san’s original structure,” Hamaguchi began. “Considering how we introduce the character, Cid, for the Remake series this time is arranged a bit differently. Nojima-san, Nomura-san and I were all aligned with this decision to consider this for the next title.
Hamaguchi is referring to Kazushige Nojima and Tetsuya Nomura, creatives who worked on the original Final Fantasy 7 as well as the Remake series.
As Gongaga wasn’t even a mandatory area in Final Fantasy 7, Hamaguchi revealed the team wanted to give the area more depth than it received in 1997. Rocket Town is being considered as an inclusion in the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series. However, Hamaguchi says “nothing is set in stone” when it comes to the storyline.
In Final Fantasy 7, Rocket Town is the site of a cancelled Shinra space program and is where you meet Cid, an aspiring rocket pilot who becomes disillusioned with Shinra and joins Cloud Strife’s party.
