Robert De Niro doesn’t appear to back down with his anti-Trump comments. The actor joinedThe Godfather IIdirector Francis Ford Coppola and director Spike Lee at the New York Film Festival for the premiere of Coppola’sMegalopolis. De Niro’s appreciation for the film quickly turned into a criticism of Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate.

TheTaxi Driveractor made comments about Trump making the movie and shared that the 45th President of the USA cannot hold anything together. De Niro’s comments could potentially worsenMegalopolis‘ box office situation, adding to its already mediocre reviews.

De Niro and Spike Lee were the special guests at the New York premiere of Coppola’sMegalopolis. Both De Niro and Lee madecomments about the former presidentduring the Q&A session. When De Niro was asked about the future of cinema, he chose to talk about the political scenario and Trump politics.

He shared that he saw the parallels between the themes of the film and Republican politics. He shared that people have to register and vote to beat Trump, whom he considered not a real Republican. De Niro shared:
I’m worried. I see the things in Francis’ film about that, the parallels and so on. To me, it’s not over ’till it’s over and we have to go at this wholeheartedly to beat the Republicans – those Republicans, they’re not real Republicans – and beat Trump. It’s that simple. We cannot have that type of person. Everybody has to get out there and vote.

Spike Lee also asked the audience to register and vote, quoting his sister,“Forward not backward.”Coppola shared that he had cast actors who voted both ways in his film. While he was not specific about who those actors were, popular Trump advocate Jon Voight is a part of Coppola’s film.

Trump supporters are likely to turn against the film. The film also faced controversy after Variety’s report on Coppola’s on-set behavior. Coppola hassued the publicationfor defamation.

The film is set to hit theaters in the US on June 20, 2025.
