Nearly all of the major esports participated in some capacity in the 2024 event, butValorantwas arguably the most notable exclusion. With many fans urging its inclusion, it seemed unfortunate that one of the most well-known esports in the world was not included in the Esports World Cup. However, that’s not the case this year.

The timing of the 2024 event didn’t work out because the top teams had a busy regular season, and many people thought the same would happen this year. But that is not going to happen. And the fans are excited, even Fabian Scheuermann, the Chief Games Officer at Esports World Cup Foundation as well:

Riot Games has shaped the cultural impact of competitive gaming, transforming esports into a global entertainment force. With League of Legends’ iconic World Championship — which continues to set new standards for immersive experiences, Valorant’s cultural collaborations, and Teamfight Tactics’ community-driven events, Riot has pioneered an ecosystem far beyond the competition.

The largest event in competitive gaming nowadays is the Esports World Cup. It hosts the biggest games and best players in the business, and it has a total prize pool worth tens of millions of dollars. Some see it as a huge event that will soon become a mainstay of the larger industry, while others view it as an immoral event that is nothing more than“esportswashing.”

Why is Riot bringingValorantinto the Esports World Cup 2025?

In anofficial blog post, Riot stated that it is adding the highly popular 5v5 shooter because of the“incredible growth of its esports scene”and demand from teams and players to bring this title to global events in new regions. By expanding the game’s licenses for the EWC, Riot is“creating more opportunities for players and teams across all three games to compete on a big stage and grow their profiles.”

Also, Riot wanted“to evaluate the tournament experience and better understand its benefit to pro players and teams”before actually addingValorantto this highly coveted tournament. And the feedback the company got from the players who participated last year was positive. Not only that, thehuge sum of amount as the prize poolwould offer“crucial financial support”for the teams as well.
