The massive Insomniac Games leak revealed a lot of confidential information about the company and its projects, announced and unannounced, as well as some projects that were planned but never saw the light of the day.

Leaked documents reveal Insomniac Games canceled sequels to Resistance and Sunset Overdrive.

The leaks continue to bring new information every day and now a company document has revealed some of the highly anticipated titles were also cancelled. There were several games that the studio internally canceled due to some reasons and the long list includes two sequels of the best Insomniac titles,Sunset Overdrive 2andResistance 4.

Leaks Reveal Insomniac Games Cancelled Resistance 4 and Sunset Overdrive 2

Sunset Overdriveis one of the best games from Insomniac that was released in 2014, and although the game wasn’t a commercial success, it was loved by many and had its fanbase. Players had been hoping for a sequel of the game for a long time and now the leaked company documents have revealed that the studio had planned for a sequel, but it was canceled due to some reasons. Another popular game that was once in development but was cancelled isResistance 4.

As per a leaked document,Sunset Overdrive 2was in development from October 2015 to September 2016 codenamed“Project Ivy“,but it was later shelved presumably forMarvel’s Spider-Mantitle as it would have been in development at the time. Although there is no mention ofMarvel’s Spider-Man, it was the only game that the studio could have been working on.

Sunset Overdrive did not sell well and was an Xbox exclusive.

However, another reason behind the game being shelved could be its not-so-stellar sales and profits as it was an Xbox and PC exclusive and Xbox One wasn’t selling as well as PS4 then. The game sold only 1.9 million copies and grossed a revenue of nearly $50 million with around $42 million in development costs and the studio’s share of the profits was just $567.

There could be one more reason why the studio would have canceled the game as Microsoft has rights for the next two sequels including any DLC expansion, ports, and derivative games. If the game was indeed shelved in favor ofMarvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac made the right choice as the game as well as the series has been immensely successful.

Resistance4 reportedly had a similar premise to The Last of Us.

Sony officially confirmed that the series has sold over 33 million copies withMarvel’s Spider-Manselling andMarvel’s Spider-Man: Miles MoralesandMarvel’s Spider-Man 2selling over 6 million copies in just two weeks.

Resistance 4would have been the fourth mainline entry in the popular series that the studio canceled around 2012. There were some reports in 2021 that Insomniac pitched the game to Sony, but it rejected the pitch saying that there were already many post-apocalyptic games in development and the company wasn’t looking to bet on another such game.

Moreover, it was also reported that the game seemed too similar to Naughty Dog’sThe Last of Usand it did not want the games competing with each other.

There are some similarities between the two games as the premise ofThe Last of Usis that a fungus turns people into zombies and aliens inResistancegrew their army by infecting people with a virus. Next up is the setting as the last two games in theResistanceseries were set in the post-apocalyptic United States, the same asThe Last of Us,so there could be some truth to these reports.

However, despite all this, if the games had been released, players would have played them anyway since both have been loved by fans and have received mostly positive reviews. But these aren’t the only games that have been shelved to make way for other titles.

According to the leaked documents, Insomniac pitched an online Spider-Man game calledSpider-Man: The Great Weband it was also rejected and then cancelled. There is also a mention of a few other games that have been canceled such asTap Samurai,Winning Hand,Dark Eden,Sandmen, andKulture.
