Remnant 2, the sequel to the well-received souls-like third-person shooter from 2019,Remnant: From the Ashes, is gearing up for a Summer 2023 release date, and, as relayed byIGN, the devs recently revealed a new class archetype, the Handler, whose main gameplay element is a permanent dog companion that battles alongside you.
As seen in the heartwarming trailer below, it appears as though the dog won’t just be an ability or a battle-specific companion, but a partner that will follow you everywhere you go. Gunfire Games' lead designer, Ben Cureton, explained to IGN that the idea with the Handler was to make an archetype for players who were looking to jump in solo, however, the Handler can be just as effective when playing in a group.

As IGN broke down, the dog can be switched between three modes, Guard, where it howls to draw aggro from enemies, Support, where it can actually heal the player and their allies, and Attack, where it goes for all-out damage. The dog’s bandana changes color whenever its mode is changed. Furthermore, you’re able to direct your dog’s location with a ping system.
Finally, if you have a Dragon Heart available (this game’s replenishable healing potion), and you die, the dog can revive you, and you can continue the fight where you left off.
As explained in a long and detailedSteam news post, Remnant 2 will come packing a new Archetype system in which, unlike the original Remnant, each Archetype will earn unique abilities, perks, and skills that can only be used by that particular archetype, meaning that what you choose when you start the game matters.
In From the Ashes, the archetype you chose gave you some weapons, gear, and traits that encouraged a specific playstyle, however, as you progressed through the game, you could replace each of these with whatever you preferred, so the archetypes were a starting point, more than anything.
This is no longer the case here, and a prime example of that is the Handler. The dog companion is seemingly the Handler’s main Trait, though that wasn’t specified. The dog being able to revive you was confirmed to be the Handler’s Prime Perk. This is an Archetype’s main perk, which you can only have one of, even if you combine two separate archetypes together into a Class.
