Following the success ofSifu, developer SloClap decided to take an entirely different approach to its previously released games with Rematch, an arcade-style 5v5 soccer game played in a third-person perspective.

If you were shocked at the studio’s new direction, you’re not the only one. After seeing Rematch unveiled, I thought Sloclap staff members were losing their minds. Based on the recent beta, it seems the game is destined to be a hit multiplayer game when it launches.

Rematch Beta Stats Show Off Impressive Engagement

The beta, which ran this past weekend, saw nearly 900,000 players participate.. This number is even more impressive when you consider that this was aclosedbeta, and wasn’t open to everyone who wanted to jump in.

Some of the stats straight from Sloclap’s press release:

It’s worth noting that Rematch is not a free-to-play game, but will cost $29.99 on consoles and PC. If you’re surprised at this multiplayer game not going the F2P route, one of its developersexplainedwhy they don’t think all online-focused games need to jump on the F2P bandwagon.

10 Sports Game Hidden Gems

There are a variety of sports and sports-adjacent video games that could do with some extra attention.

While some might dismiss Rematch as just another sports game, it seems to be more than that. Based on the beta stats, it has the appeal of another small game that blew up: Rocket League.

Never underestimate the pull of arcade sports games like NBA Jam in providing a non-intimidating way for people to access games. Even if you’re not a soccer fan, it’s easy to understand Rematch’s appeal. Aside from the game not featuring real players or licensed teams, Rematch will lock players into one character for the entire match, vastly different from your standard sports sim where one player controls the whole team.

While Sloclap has announced nothing, expect an open beta to be available for consoles and PC before the game’s launch on June 19.
