In an interview withGamesRadar, Arkane Studios Director Harvey Smith provided a breakdown of what players should expect fromRedfall’s co-op structure, gameplay elements, and open world. More interestingly, he also touched on the general assumption that Redfall is a Left 4 Dead clone, iterating that the upcomingXboxexclusive is more like loading into Far Cry.
Smith expanded on this point by saying that sometimes Redfall feels like what you’d get if you blended the Arkane creative values with Far Cry 2 or STALKER. “It’s totally understandable for somebody to come to that conclusion. There are four playable characters, you can play together cooperatively, and you’re going against the undead. But, in terms of the way that you play and experience Redfall, it’s not like those games at all. Redfall is more like loading into Far Cry.” Smith said on the comparison of Redfall and Left 4 Dead.

Players should not expect the game’s open world to be overwhelming, as Harvey claims that it is more compact with no cars but urban towns and rural districts. “I think we will eventually go back to the very sealed immersive sim-like environments,” Smith said. Players can talk to NPCs in their home base, where they also can pick up story-driven missions, get side quests, or pick a direction to start hunting zombies.
Smith then continued with some fresh details on the gameplay, saying that players will find instances of combat, story vignettes, and chaotic results as part of a day-night circle, which changes the feel of the game radically. As for the co-op structure, it was revealed that there is no restriction on the same vampire hunter joining one party though there are benefits of having a well-rounded group. “We have a mechanical system where the longer the heroes play together, the more intimate their dialogue lines become and, eventually, they’ll get a game mechanic buff called the ‘Trust Buff.'”
Lastly, director Harvey Smith talked about the power of Xbox Game Pass, saying that they can expose their creative values, including deep world creation, environmental storytelling, and creating lovingly crafted worlds, to a lot of people by reaching a wider audience. “The pool that Game Pass offers is huge for us. It’s kind of shocking, and scary in a way. Like, how many people are going to play Redfall in the first week? What if it’s a lot more than we anticipated… we’re going to get a lot of feedback very quickly, and a lot of people will see what we’ve spent the last few years on. Redfall is our pandemic game, man. It’s easy to forget now, but there were dark days during the pandemic.”
In case you missed out,Redfall is rumored to be targeting a release in early May 2023, but an exact release date has yet to be confirmed by Arkane.
