One of the most long-standing traditions inPokémonis trading with friends. Some evolutions even require trading, such as Gengar and Alakazam way back in Gen I. Even if you’re playing a game solo, there are NPCs with whom you may trade built into the game.

If you have ambitions of completing the Pokédex inPokemon Scarlet and Violet, trading is a necessity, as there are version exclusives. Find yourself a friend with a different version than you and help each other out. It’s what Pokémon is all about, at the end of the day.
How To Begin Trading
Trading in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet is similar to how previous installments of the franchise have worked. If anything, its smoother and easier than ever before. To start the process, head to the Poké Portal from your X menu and select either Link Trade or Surprise Trade.
Surprise Trade
If you choose to Surprise Trade, you’ll be prompted to select a Pokémon to trade away. You won’t know who you’re trading with or what you’ll receive in return.Just select the Pokémon you’re willing to say goodbye to, and your part is done. The game will notify you when the trade is complete.Once it is, select Surprise Trade again to receive your new friend!
Link Trade
If you choose Link Trade, you may either set a code or be paired up with someone randomly. In this mode, you’llselect the Pokémon you want to trade, and you’ll see what your trade partner is offering in return before you make your decision. This is the best way to trade with friends, but you can also trade with strangers, too! Once you and your trade partner agree on the trade, it’ll be completed, and you’ll have a new Pokémon friend.
Multiplayer Mode Trading
If you’re playing in multiplayer mode, you can only trade with those in your group. It works the same as Link Trading, and you use the same process, butyou’ll only be matched up with folks in your group. It’s definitely the easiest method by far, and it is a fun addition to the multiplayer and trading experience.
Happy trading!
