Game of Throneswas not free of complicated relationships and Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth were one of them. Played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Gwendoline Christie, the characters’ relationship begins with each having hostility towards the other. Over time, though, the two come closer, especially after Jaime saves Brienne from being r-ped.

While fans often get lost in the raw and harrowing storytelling of the series, they might end up missing out on noticing beautifully shot scenes. This includes a scene between Jaime and Brienne in the third season, which serves as an unforgettable homage to theA Song of Ice andFirebooks.

A Beautifully CraftedGame of ThronesScene

In season three ofGame of Thrones,Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) gets into a tub with Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) in episode five titled,Kissed by Fire. The scene takes place in Harrenhal as Brienne tries to wash away her memories of Bolton soldiers. An injured Jaime joins her.

Jaime and Brienne’s relationship started off with animosity with the former often mocking the latter. Brienne also saw Jaime as an arrogant and dishonorable man. Over time, the characters’ respect for each other grows on their journey and when Jaime loses a hand saving Brienne from Locke’s men and their horrifying plans for her, Brienne’s perspective of Jaime changes for the better.

“She looks too pretty and thin to play Brienne”: Gwendoline Christie Was Glad To Be Booed By Fans After Her Casting in Game of Thrones

InKissed by Fire, the shared bathtub scene is not romantic but it still sends a chill down the viewers and how it was shot may be one reason why. As Jaime confides in Brienne about him killing the Mad King, you may notice that while the latter is shown sitting in good lighting and clean, the former is injured and in the dark, a subtle yet powerful depiction of their characters.

The scene, knowingly or unknowingly, also pays homage to theA Song of Ice and Firebook,A Feast for Crows. In the book, as Jaime gets into the bathtub, Brienne makes a mental note of comparing him to half-God and half-Corpse. In the episode, Jaime’s look perfectly captures this quote.

The book reads,

At Harrenhal the tubs had been huge, and made of stone. The bathhouse had been thick with the steam rising off the water, and Jaime had come walking through that mist naked as his name day, looking half a corpse and half a god.

It’s subtleties like this one that makeGame of Thronesone of the best shows to have graced the television industry.

As for Brienne and Jaime, some fans rooted for them to get into a romantic relationship and while their wish was fulfilled in the final season, Jaime ended up going back to his love and twin sister, Cersei, leaving Brienne and the fans heartbroken.

This was the Jaime with whom every fan fell in love. His character development was off the charts, that is, until everything came crashing down on him inseason eightexactly like the walls of Red Keep. Since then, fans have been furious with the creators for ruining everything they built for him over the years.

Fans ApplaudGame of Thronesfor the Scene

A scene like the one mentioned above deserves all the recognition it can get and we were glad to see a handful of fans point out the beauty of it. Not only was the scene shot to perfection, but everything from Jaime’s monologue to Brienne’s reactions was the epitome of storytelling.

It has been years, eleven to be exact, sinceKissed by Firewas first released and this scene still remains close to fans’ hearts.

Take a look at the praise left by fans under aYouTubevideo showing the bathtub scene:

@michakasprzak7528 –People don’t realize how well this scene was filmed. Brienne clean and in good lighting [and] Jaime dirty, hurt, and in shadows.

@zeemaybee –Damn. A five minute monologue. But you never really notice because this scene draws you in intensely. His storytelling is so vivid.

@DavidSW4G –Brilliant acting. In the books, Brienne says he looked like “half a corpse and half a god.” Nikolaj Coster-Waldau nailed it.

@em_dash –Best scene in the whole damned series.

@poseidon –The most poetically painful scene displayed in the series. Brilliant acting.

@tylerbushong3452 –I love how her face slowly breaks down and reveals emotions as she realizes he’s 100 percent telling the truth.

Chills. Literal chills.

Alex Graves, Bryan Cogman, and Anette Haellmigk did a fabulous job directing, writing, and filming the entire episode and they certainly deserve credit for their work. Katie Weiland’s editing also took the episode to a whole new level. All in all, it was the perfect cast and crew combination to bring such a deep scene to life.
