Blizzardhas announced a new event forOverwatch 2where players will tap into the power of the ancient gods. The new Greek-themed Battle for Olympus event kicks off on January 5, promising players godly powers and “divine rewards,” though at this time Blizzard has not specified what these rewards shall be.
Overwatch 2, which launched in 2022, has seen a steady stream of content updates since its launch. From new cosmetics to new heroes, there’s plenty for fans to sink their teeth into. With a free-to-play model, there’s no better time to jump in for some team-based action. With the new event, Battle for Olympus, Blizzard looks to shake up the core systems of the game. The event brings a game mode of the same name, which will be a free-for-all deathmatch with a twist. In addition, seven heroes from the roster will be granted new, devastating abilities.

The selected heroes are Widowmaker, Junker Queen, Roadhog, Lucio, Reinhardt, Pharah, and Ramattra. Widowmaker and Roadhog embody Greek monsters with Widowmaker turning her opponents into stone. Meanwhile, Roadhog throws stones with Cyclopean strength. Junker Queen calls down Zeus' lightning to spark her foes. The rest of the roster is receiving smaller tweaks, such asLucio’s ultimatestunning opponents andRamattra’s ultimatenow lifting opponents into the air. Alongside these new abilities, players can also gain access to Greek-themed cosmetics for the participating heroes.
Heroes won’t be the only changes the game receives as the map for the event, the pre-existing Ilios, will now feature a statue throughout the match of the high-scoring player during the match. While only cosmetic this change should incentivize players to perform well and think carefully about who they queue for the event. One detail, pointed out by Polygon, is small armor packs scattered around in the trailer, looking very similar to those deployed by fellow hero Torbjorn. What these armor packs do is unknown at this time, though players won’t have to wait too long to find out. Battle for Olympus runs for two weeks starting January 5 to January 19, with the Lunar New Year event to follow starting January 17.
