Genji is a cyborg ninja that can terrorize the back line and pick off squishy characters with ease. He has not changed much inOverwatch 2but the game’s faster pace fits him just fine. His wall climb and double jump give him the mobility to stay alive while you look for an opportunity to pick off high-priority targets, while also enabling a plethora of flanking options on any map.

Mastering Genji requires knowing when to all in or take fights to start assassinating the enemy team. It’s not about fighting fair but rather taking advantage of your tools to gain the upper hand. This guide will go over some tips and tricks for playing Genji effectively.
10In And Out
Genji’s Swift Strike is a dash that deals 50 damage to enemies you pass through. Most notably, the cooldown resets on eliminations and is a great tool for bursting low-health targets to finish them off and using another Swift Strike to get back to your team for healing, or onto the next target to do it all again.
Keep healers in mind since if the target you are trying to burst survives you have no way out. The ability still resets even if you kill them with someone other than Swift Strike, so you’re able to also use it to get closer so your shurikens are easier to hit.

9Know Your Enemy
Genji is perfect for assassinating other heroes, especially low-mobility ones. Prioritizing eliminating healers first makes it much easier to take out the rest. Genji can struggle at killing targets being healed unless he lands lots of headshot burst damage.
It is much easier when healers are dead but if you catch enemies isolated you can also go for it. attempt to prioritize killing Healers first, then DPS, and finally Tank. That is the ideal way of eliminating a team but go for whatever the situation tells you to.

8Untouchable
Genji has a lot of mobility with hiswall climbanddouble jumpability paired with his dash that refreshes on eliminations. When going in for kills always stay mobile to be hard to hit. Avoiding damage buys you time to find an opening to go for a kill. Abuse Genji’s mobility to flank targets, escape, or just be hard to hit.
It can also make it impossible for your target to escape since you can follow them anywhere.

7Trump Card
Genji’s Deflect can deflect all projectiles, including some ultimates like Zarya’sGraviton Surge, or Hanzo’sDragonstrikeif he blocks it while it is an arrow. This ability allows you to block telegraphed damage like Reinhardt Fire StrikeJunkrat grenades or Moira orbs to deal some extra damage and protect the team from them.
It is also helpful for diving as it can punish players who are panicking and easily turn the fight in your favor if you predict an ability. Be careful when it is on cooldown as you are vulnerable without it. This ability can’t block non-projectiles like beams, but it can block melee attacks from the front.

6Wait For It
Deflect lasts for a duration of 2 seconds in which you block damage from the front and reflect projectiles back to where you are aiming. If you use it in a fight and the enemy gets low while you are deflecting, you can end it early by using Swift Strike to finish them off before they even know what happened, or before they get healed.

It is important to aim where you want the projectiles to go since they will deflect where you are aiming.
5Double Dash
After castingDragonbladeGenji’s Swift Strike resets allowing him to get into position before using his ultimate and being able to dash again to get on a target or finish them off.
you may use this to dive into the backline to soften them up and get into position, or to go upward to get a good angle and be an easy AnaNano boosttarget before closing in for the kill. Try to use Swift Strike before using Dragonblade for the extra damage.
4Fast Swings
Genji’s ultimate is very powerful for killing squishy targets, often being able to kill them in two sword swings. Take advantage of your allies ultimates like Ana’sNano boost, or Kiriko’sKitsune Rushto boost your damage or attack speed giving you more power with your ult.
Dragonblade is powerful on its own but with the right support ultimate it can wipe out a team.
3Right Tool For The Job
Genji can throw his Shurikens in either acone of threein front of him orthree rapid-fire throwsstraight ahead. The spread throw is much better for close-range bursts to the head since up close it is much faster and easier to hit enemies this way. The other is better for mid-range and long-range poke exchanges.
Throw shuriken at enemies to soften them up while you look for a health bar to get low enough to dive. If they survive the Swift Strike, use the cone-shaped throw and a melee attack to finish them off and get your dash back. Point-blank the alt-fire does a good burst and is much easier to hit than the primary fire.
2A Time And Place
Genji is a strong pick for the right team composition which goes for both the enemy team and your own team. Genji is a diving character and will often be in the backline of the enemy or off on his own flanking. With this in mind, you need to have healers on your team that can support you without getting in too much danger like Lucio, Ana, or Kiriko.
Knowing when to hop off Genji like when the opponent picks Pharah, Echo, Brigitte, or Winston who can easily shut down every play you attempt to make is just as important. Genji excels against low-mobility characters that need to aim shots with precision to be effective.
1Know When To Bail
Often when going for a risky play you will have to know when it is going to fail before you are killed. Always have an exit plan if you draw more heat than you can handle. Test the water with shurikens and when you see someone get low enough to dive or see how many people even notice. Use Swift Strike when you spot an opportunity to go in for the kill.
Think of your Swift Strike as an all-in and if it fails you are stranded. Never commit to a dive until you are sure you can finish your target off, and play safe enough that you can try different angles until you find the right one.
