At that point, no one knew Kuma’s backstory, and they thought of him as one of the World Government’s pawns.

Bartholomew Kuma Might Have Never Intended To Hurt Roronoa Zoro
Bartholomew Kuma is one of the most selfless characters inOne Piece. Initially, he was not liked by the fandom due to surrendering himself to be a puppet for the World Government. However, whenEiichiro Odarevealed his backstory during the Egghead Island arc, fans realized how wrong they were. Seeing the nature of Kuma, a Reddit user predicted the outcome of the Thriller Bark arc if Zoro never confronted Kuma.
IfZorofailed to pass Kuma’s loyalty test or never interrupted him, theNikyu Nikyuno Mi user might have taken the pain upon himself. It was shown during Kuma’s backstory that he used to take other people’s pain and take it upon himself. He never let anyone know about it except for Ginny. Moreover, being loyal to Monkey D. Dragon and the Revolutionary Army, he would have taken Luffy’s upon like he did in the past.
He would have suffered significant damage if he went through the pain and would have proof to show that he did not let the Straw Hat Pirates just walk by and put up a fight. It would have been like hitting two birds with one stone. However, when Zoro interrupted, his plan changed, and he may have wanted to see whether Luffy’s friends were loyal to him. If not Zoro, Sanji would have taken the pain. After everything, Kuma deduced that Luffy does have trustworthy friends.
Kuma Always Looked After The Straw Hat Pirates
Apart from being selfless, Kuma was also one of the most caring guys. Even after suffering so much from childhood, he followed his father’s principle of keeping faith in Sun God Nika, who would change everything. After Thriller Bark, Kuma helped the Straw Hat Pirates escape from the Sabaody Archipelago and sent them to different locations, where they trained for two years to become stronger.

While everyone was busy training, the Buccaneer protected the Thousand Year from every possible damage and left only when one of the Straw Hats arrived. Even after being turned into a Pacifista, he came to his daughter’s aid and fought alongside Luffy against Saint Jaygarcia Saturn. While Kuma may not remember, he fulfilled his biggest dream of meeting Sun God Nika in Egghead. Moreover, he would have never hurt Nika at Thriller Bark since he was the one who kept him going.
